Even though the Hearts struggled at the free throw line, missing their first five tosses in the fourth quarter, Dalton Fox made a pair with just four seconds remaining to secure the victory and give Effingham a 2-1 record in the tournament.
For the second time Saturday, the Hearts shot better than 50 percent from the floor. They made 19-of-37 attempts, a 51 percent clip. They were 5-for-12 from behind the arc and 5-for-12 at the foul line. They also held a 31-20 rebounding advantage, with Heil leading the team with seven rebounds.
For Heil, who started both games Saturday in place of Brayden Pals, who fractured a thumb in Wednesday night’s tournament opener, it was a strong performance. The junior post player had 10 points against Champaign Central and finished the day with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
“Logan has been doing really well for us at the JV level. He’s averaged about 20 points over the past four games,” Farmer said. “He’s a football player by trade and really aggressive. He’s a quick, strong player, and did a lot of good things for us today.”
The Hearts improved to 9-13 on the season. They won’t play again until Thursday, Feb. 3, when they return home to face Mattoon.
