The St. Anthony Bulldogs could have been in trouble.

First of all, they were facing a talented Dieterich team in what many believed was an early “championship” game in the National Trail Conference race.

And at halftime, their two leading scorers – Brock Fearday and Ryan Schmidt – were a combined 1-for-11 from the floor and, together, had scored just four points.

As it turned out, that was not an issue.

Thanks to Keenan Griffith and Will Fearday.

That pair combined to score 19 first-half points, helping the Bulldogs build a lead.

And when Brock Fearday and Schmidt began scoring in the second half, that lead continued to grow, resulting in a 68-40 victory before a big crowd Friday night at the Enloe Center.

“This was a nice confidence boost for us,” St. Anthony coach Cody Rincker said. “This was our biggest test since the Thanksgiving Tournament. We played with mental toughness and physical toughness. And we won handily, despite our two top scorers not having their best games. This was a big win for us.”

Nobody expected this to be a lopsided game. And the first half wasn’t.

The St. Anthony Bulldogs had four players score in double figures Tuesday night, en route to a 65-37 win at Newton.

Will Fearday, Keenan Griffith, Sam Link and Miles Waldhoff combined to score 47 points.

The Bulldogs led throughout. They were up 14-10 after the first eight minutes, but then outscored the host Eagles 37-21 during the middle two quarters to build the lead to 20 points, 51-31, entering the fourth period.

Will Fearday finished with a game-high 13 points, while Griffith scored 12 and both Link and Waldhoff added 11.

St. Anthony improved to 7-2 overall. They will return home for a key National Trail Conference contest Friday night against Dieterich. Both teams are currently 3-0 in the NTC. The Maroons are 7-1 overall.

The St. Anthony Bulldogs used a big third quarter to gain control of the game, en route to a 66-45 Homecoming victory at home Friday night over St. Elmo/Brownstown.

St. Anthony owned a 26-17 lead at intermission and then blew it open by outscoring the Eagles 23-12 in the third period. Heading into the final eight minutes, the Bulldogs owned a comfortable 49-29 advantage.

Ryan Schmidt and Brock Fearday combined for 18 of those third-quarter points. Schmidt had 11 and Fearday seven and both players hit three-pointers during the scoring surge.

Schmidt finished with a game-high 21 points, while Fearday scored 15 and Keenan Griffith added 10.

The Bulldogs improved to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the National Trail Conference. They will travel to Newton on Tuesday night.

History was made at the Enlow Center.

The St. Anthony and Teutopolis girls basketball teams have been playing each other for many years.

But when the final horn sounded Monday night, it was the first time ever the St. Anthony team walked off the court a winner.

And they did so in an impressive way.

They attacked from the opening tip – both on offense and defense – and it produced winning results.

The host Lady Bulldogs used a big second quarter to turn the game around, withstood a pair of T-Town surges in the third period and then pulled away at the end, posting a 62-49 victory.

“Attacking is in our DNA,” said a wet St. Anthony coach Aaron Rios after the game. His team could not only be heard celebrating in their locker room, it seems they seized the opportunity to dump water on their coach.

“We always want to be aggressive,” Rios admitted. “We’re a much better team when we keep attacking.”

That was most evident in the third period. The Lady Bulldogs built a seven-point lead at halftime, but that was reduced to one in the opening 55 seconds of the second half.

Nancy Ruholl was unstoppable, especially in the first period.

She connected on three shots from behind the arc and scored 21 points – all in the first eight minutes – helping the St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs break out to an early lead and then coast to a 61-18 victory at home over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City.

The Lady Bulldogs led 24-4 after the first quarter, expanded it to 37-14 at halftime and took a 50-18 advantage into the fourth period.

Ruholl finished with a game-high 34 points. Addi Nuxholl added nine.

The Lady Bulldogs, who improved to 9-1 overall and 4-0 in the National Trail Conference, will return to action Monday. They will welcome the Teutopolis Lady Shoes to the Enlow Center.
