Tate Niebrugge and Aiden Beck combined to shoot a 79, win the Alternate Shot competition and help Effingham to a third place overall finish in the Mt. Zion Invitational, called “The Cup.”

The tournament is divided into three contests – four-ball, scramble and alternate shot.

Charleston won the four-ball and finished second in the alternate shot and emerged the winner in the nine-team field. The Trojans finished with 230 points, followed by Mattoon with 239 and Effingham with 252.

Ben Donsbach and Austin Waldhoff had a terrific scramble round, finishing with a 76. Ryker Schneider and Ethan Ritz shot 97 in the four-ball.

“Congrats to Tate and Aiden,” said EHS coach Jeff Schafer. “The alternate shot is, by far, the hardest to play. I appreciate their willingness to do it and it paid off for them both. Ben and Austin were right there in the scramble until the last few holes. If a shot or two goes the other way, they had a chance to win, as well. So it was good day for us overall.”

The Hearts will play today (Saturday) at the Windsor/Stew-Stras Invitational.
