The Effingham boys golf team participated in the Apollo Conference Tournament Monday and finished fifth.

Charleston was the conference champion, finishing with a team score of 311 at the Moweaqua Country Club. Lincoln was runner-up with 327, Mattoon 329, Mt. Zion 338, Effingham 352, Mahomet-Seymour 361 and Taylorville 402.

Aiden Beck had the Hearts’ best round, shooting an 18-hole total of 82. Tate Niebrugge finished at 86, Austin Waldhoff 94 and Ben Donsbach 96 to complete the team scoring. Ryker Schneider (97) and Nick Burgess (98) also played.

“We finished a disappointing fifth,” said EHS coach Jeff Schafer. “We had too many big numbers today. We have to play more for the team and less about our own score. We gave away too many shots because of that. We are much better than we showed today.”

Effingham will play today (Tuesday) at Taylorville.
