Lady Hearts second in Apollo Conference
Ava Boehm shot a sparkling 76 Monday afternoon, helping the Effingham Lady Hearts claim second place in the Apollo Conference Girls Golf Tournament.
Boehm claimed medalist honors and was named all-conference after winning the event by seven strokes. Averie Bushue, from Teutopolis, was the individual runner-up with an 83. She also was named to the all-conference team.
The Charleston Lady Trojans emerged as conference champions, finishing with 367 total strokes. EHS was second with 376, followed by Teutopolis at 410, Mattoon 411, Mahomet-Seymour 423, Taylorville 435, Mt. Zion 437 and Lincoln 495.
For the Lady Hearts, Anna Sigg shot 94, Annie Frost 101 and Ella Niebrugge 105 to complete the team score. Anna Hirtzel (106) and Marah Kirk (107) also competed. By finishing 8th overall, Sigg was also part of the all-conference team.
For the Lady Shoes, Abigail Wortman finished with a 104, Lexie Niebrugge 107 and Mollie Koester 116 to round out the team score for THS. Alaina Helmink (124) and Josie Deters (148) also played.
Hearts, Shoe compete in Apollo Conference Tournament
Mattoon’s Stuart Druin and Colton Romine both shot 76 to tie for medalist honors and help the Green Wave post a run-away victory Monday afternoon in the Apollo Conference Boys Golf Tournament, played at the Lincoln Elks Golf Course in Lincoln.
Mattoon finished with a team total of 317, which was 25 strokes better than runner-up Lincoln’s 342. Charleston was third with 347, followed by Mahomet-Seymour at 349, Mt. Zion 352, Effingham 362, Teutopolis 393 and Taylorville 397.
Effingham’s Colby Haynes finished fifth overall and was named to the all-conference team after firing an 80. Preston Latch and Ryker Schneider both shot 92 and Max Woelfer 98 to complete the Hearts team score. Nick Burgess (103) and Ethan Ritz (103) also competed.
“We have steadily made some progress all year, getting a little closer to the top teams in the conference,” said EHS coach Jeff Schafer. “We are a couple of shots per person from really making it interesting.
“Congratulations to sophomore Colby Haynes, who overcame a really tough week (with the passing of his grandfather) to shoot his all-time best score in tough conditions,” Schafer added. “I’m really proud of his focus and attitude to just battle all day.”
For Teutopolis, Andy Niebrugge finished with 92, Gabe Schlink 98, Hayden Jansen 100 and Zac Niebrugge 103 to complete the team score. Ethan Thoele (106) and Jack Poelker (106) also competed.

Effingham posts win over Mt. Zion
The Effingham tennis team faced Mt. Zion Monday afternoon and came away with a solid 7-2 victory.

CROSS COUNTRY
Newton tops St. Anthony girls
The Newton Lady Eagles captured three of the first four places Monday afternoon, en route to a cross country win over St. Anthony, Altamont and Flora.
The Lady Eagles finished with 25 points, while St. Anthony had 30. Altamont and Flora didn’t have enough runners to earn a team score.
For the Lady Bulldogs, Rilie Willenborg finished 3rd in 22:39; Emma Helmink 5th in 23:03; Stacie Vonderheide 6th in 23:13; Alexis Hetzer 7th in 23:26; and Riley Guy 9th in 24:20.
Altamont’s Brooke Runge was 8th in 23:39.
