Effingham turned in a “disappointing” performance Tuesday and dropped a 6-2 soccer decision at home against Mattoon.

“We struggled to control the field tonight,” said EHS coach Weston Peno. “The first half was rough. After a quick goal by Mattoon and consistent control by them, our defense began to break down. The second half wasn’t much better.”

Jett McMillan scored a first-half goal for the Hearts and Bryan Angel added a goal in the second half.

“I want to give a big shout-out to Brandon Duncan,” Peno noted. “His play as goalie was phenomenal. He had eight saves and they were very well done and clean.”

Effingham will play today (Wednesday) at Mt. Vernon.
