“We wanted to get the ball to Collin and let him go downhill to the hoop,” Rincker explained. “But they shut that off. That’s when Griffin flashed to the top of the key. His shot was right on line. It just missed.”

In the overtime period, Cooper Schallenberg drilled a three-pointer and Zach Powell had a three-point play to stake the Cardinals to a six-point lead 90 seconds into the extra session. Evan Houser and Schallenberg both hit a pair of free throws to cap the 10-0 run and make it 47-37 with only 1:23 to play.

“They hit that three and then got the three-point play and we were down six pretty quick,” Rincker said. “It set us pretty far behind and there just wasn’t enough time for a comeback.”

Early in the game, it was all Pleasant Plains. The Cardinals knocked down four shots from long range in the first quarter to build a 14-6 advantage. Pleasant Plains then opened the second quarter on a 6-2 run that expanded the gap to 20-8. At halftime, the Cardinals owned a 21-13 advantage.

“We were sluggish that first half,” Rincker said. “It seemed like we had an emotional letdown after the first three games. Our energy level and emotional level just wasn’t the same. We showed more signs of life in the second half.”

Pleasant Plains, which finished with a 3-1 tourney record, got 18 points from Schallenberg, 14 from Houser and 10 from Powell, who was named to the all-tournament team.

Westendorf was the only Bulldog to crack double figures. He finished with 16 points. St. Anthony shot 41 percent overall, connecting on 15-of-37 attempts. They were 5-for-15 from behind the arc and 8-for-10 at the foul line. They were 2-2 in the tournament.

“We got better this week,” Rincker said. “We showed we’re capable of doing good things. Our two losses showed we can play with anybody. Right now, I really like where this team is at.”

The Bulldogs, now 10-6 on the season, will play at home Tuesday night against Robinson.
