Rincker also realized Tolono Unity wasn’t as prepared as other teams in the tournament.
“They just finished a very successful football season,” the St. Anthony coach explained. “They haven’t been able to practice with their full team as much. I’m sure that played a factor.”
The Bulldogs didn’t let up, scoring the first nine points of the second half to balloon the lead to 47-11. It was 57-24 advantage heading into the final eight minutes. Since the margin was more than 30 points, the clock ran continuously throughout the fourth period.
Rincker utilized two units throughout the contest, substituting five new players at a time.
“For that second unit, it was the first varsity minutes of their career,” he noted. “They are a work in progress. As the week goes on, I think you’ll see them play with more confidence.
“I really like our depth,” Rincker added. “We’ll figure out what we’ve got and how all the pieces fit together.”
Offensively, St. Anthony shot a torrid 59 percent for the game, connecting on 27-of-46 attempts. From two-point range, the Bulldogs were event better, making 64 percent of their shots. They finished 2-of-7 from behind the arc and 7-of-14 from the free throw line.
SAHS had three players in double figures. Dust, the 6’7” senior center, led the way with 17 points, while Webb scored 14 and Jack Hoene added 12. The three-guard combo of Webb, Hoene and Logan Antrim combined for 34 points.
“I thought the three guards played very well together,” Rincker said. “They read the floor well and played with intensity and a little bit of moxie. That helps make up a little for their lack of height.”
The Bulldogs defense forced the Rockets into 27 turnovers, but St. Anthony committed 20 of its own.
“At the pace we’re going to play, we’re going to have some turnovers,” Rincker noted. “I can live with some of those. When you give 110 percent, turnovers are going to happen. But 20 is too many.”
St. Anthony will return to action Wednesday, facing Highland at 8 p.m.
