Would the St. Anthony Bulldogs experience an emotional letdown after the big win over Teutopolis the previous night?

Jaccob Dust and Jack Hoene made sure that wouldn’t happen.

The pair of seniors combined to score 50 points Saturday night, leading the Bulldogs to a 58-43 win at home over Newton.

Hoene pumped in 13 first-quarter points and the Bulldogs built a 20-12 lead after eight minutes of play. Hoene and Dust both had 15 points at halftime and the hosts owned a 34-18 advantage.

Behind the hot shooting of Justin Zumbahlen, who knocked down four 3-pointers in the third quarter, the Eagles got back to within 41-37 heading into the final period.

Hoene and Dust then combined to score 13 points in the final eight minutes and the Bulldogs outscored Newton 17-6 to secure the victory.

Dust finished with 28 points, while Hoene added 22.

Zumbahlen scored 18 to lead the Eagles, who dipped to 15-12 on the season.

St. Anthony improved to 22-3. The Bulldogs will play at South Central on Tuesday night and then prepare for the big matchup with Central A&M Saturday at the Teutopolis Shootout. That game is scheduled for 4 p.m.

St. Anthony also won the junior varsity game by a score of 66-46. Ty Wiedman scored 15 points, while Grant Nuxoll and Seth Hotze both had 12.
