It was supposed to be a “Game of the Year” type of experience.

Two good teams that play in the same conference.

And both ranked in the Top 10 of the Class 1A poll.

But it was not at all what anyone expected.

The St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs made sure of that.

They scored the first 10 points of the game and just continued to roll.

When the final horn sounded Thursday night, the Lady Bulldogs had posted a dominating 77-37 victory at home over Neoga.

There’s nothing like a 15-0 scoring run to set an early tone.

And that’s exactly what the St. Anthony Bulldogs did Tuesday night.

They ran off the final 15 points of the first quarter and then rolled to a 58-33 victory at home over Neoga in a National Trail Conference match-up.

Utilizing a zone press and hot shooting, the Bulldogs established control in the opening period. After a basket by Neoga’s Quintin Richards, the game was tied 6-6 a little over two minutes into the game.

But for the next 14 minutes of the first half, it was all St. Anthony.

Max Koenig’s short jumper put the Bulldogs on top and started the scoring spree. Ryan Schmidt came off the bench to score six points and Brock Fearday scored five, including a three-pointer. At the end of the first quarter, the hosts led 21-6.

The margin just continued to expand in the second period. St. Anthony’s pressure continued to cause problems – the Indians turned the ball over 12 times in the first half – and the Bulldogs were able to capitalize, converting several of those into easy baskets.

Two of the top 10 ranked Class 1A teams in the state will be battling in the annual National Trail Conference Girls Basketball Tournament, which will begin on Monday, Jan. 16.

All games will be played at Beecher City High School.

The Neoga Lady Indians and St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs are seeded No. 1 and No. 2 respectively. Those teams are currently ranked 5th and 8th in the Class 1A polls.

The rest of the tournament seeds include – No. 3 Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City (CHBC); No. 4 North Clay; No. 5 Altamont; No. 6 Brownstown/St. Elmo (BSE); No. 7 Dieterich; No. 8 South Central; and No. 9 Windsor/Stew-Straws (WSS).

The tournament will begin on Monday, followed by games on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Here is the schedule:

The St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs built a big early lead and then hung off for a 61-56 victory Saturday at Flora.

Lucy Fearday scored 11 points and Nancy Ruholl added eight, as the Lady Bulldogs built a 25-10 lead after the opening eight minutes. But the Lady Wolves got within nine points, 37-28, at halftime and were down by 10 points, 47-37, heading into the final period.

Flora then outscored SAHS to make it a five-point game at the end.

The Lady Bulldogs had three players in double figures. Fearday led the way with 20 points, while Ruholl scored 15 and Stacie Vonderheide added 10.
