And Thursday night’s game started in similar fashion as Monday’s game. Niemerg made a basket, Lexie Niebrugge connected from long range and Izzy Hardiek converted a Paris turnover into a score, giving the Lady Shoes a 7-2 lead three minutes into the game.
But the Lady Tigers used their quickness and aggressive play to continually get behind the T-Town defense and score easy baskets.
“We gave them at least 14 run-out points,” Thompson noted. “They just ran down the floor and got easy shots. Defensively, we don’t want to allow the other team to do what they want to do. But we’re not talking, not hustling and just standing around.”
Teutopolis held an 11-10 lead after eight minutes. A free throw by Rigdon and a 3-pointer from Katelyn Littleton gave the Lady Tigers a 20-18 advantage at intermission.
Roepke helped the Lady Shoes stay close in the third period. The senior guard made three shots from behind the arc and scored 11 points.
But Sarah Isaf, the MVP of the Charleston tournament, also broke loose after halftime. She pumped in 13 points in the third period, including two made shots from three-point range, and helped the Lady Tigers carry a 40-37 lead into the final quarter.
“Isaf is a good player. She’s their leader,” Thompson said. “She put the team on her back in that third period. And our defense didn’t help. Our individual and team defense isn’t getting better, but it has to.”
Isaf opened the fourth quarter with another three, followed by the basket by Niemerg that made it 43-39 and 6-0 run by Paris that put the hosts in control.
Isaf finished with a game-high 24 points, with 20 of those coming in the second half. Krabel added 12 for the Lady Tigers, who are now 18-0 on the season.
Roepke and Niebrugge led the Lady Shoes with 14 points each. T-Town shot 45 percent overall, making 18-of-40 shots. They were 6-for-13 from three-point range and 4-for-8 at the foul line. Niebrugge had six rebounds, but Paris held a 22-16 advantage on the boards.
“We’re not playing fast or playing smart defensively,” Thompson said. “It’s my job to get them there and they have to allow me to get them there. We have a lot of growing up and improving to do.
“I hope we get another chance to play Paris this year,” Thompson added. “But that would be in the postseason in the sectional and we’ve got a long way to go before we get there.”
The Lady Shoes, now 11-4, will return home Monday night to face Flora.
