The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes made 10-of-13 free throws in the fourth quarter Tuesday night, helping them secure a 48-43 victory at Newton.

The game was close throughout. T-Town held slim leads of 12-11 after the first period and 19-18 at halftime. The Shoes were on top 33-25 heading into the final eight minutes.

Newton’s Kyle Schafer scored 11 of his game-high 20 points in the fourth period, but success at the free throw line was the difference for THS. Evan Wermert was 5-for-5 from the foul line, while Jordan Hardiek made both of his foul shots and Luke Ungrund was 3-for-4.

“We played a very sloppy game,” THS coach Chet Reeder said. “Newton was physical and rebounded very well. But we were able to make some key shots and our free throws to seal the victory.”

Reeder also said Brock Deters “was incredible.” The senior center turned in a double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down 13 rebounds.

Wermert led four Shoes in double figures with 14 points. Jordan Hardiek finished with 11 and Ungrund added 10.

The Shoes, now 16-7, will return to action Friday at St. Anthony.
