Tegeler’s basket 21 seconds into the second quarter was the start of a 16-2 scoring run. Kaylee Niebrugge and Schumacher both scored twice and Lexie Niebrugge made another from behind the arc and scored five points, as the hosts increased the margin to 19 points, 28-9.
At intermission, after outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 30-5 after those opening three minutes, it was a 30-11 margin.
The first 6½ minutes of the second half weren’t nearly as sharp, however. Emily Konkel hit a jumper and Izzy Hardiek had a free throw, but the Lady Bulldogs went on an 11-3 run to narrow the gap to 11 points, 33-22, and had a possession to get the lead under double digits.
But Lexie Niebrugge scored the final five points, including a three right before the buzzer, to get the lead back to 16 points, 38-22, heading into the final eight minutes.
“Mahomet put together a nice run in the third quarter,” Thompson said. “We had 5 straight possessions we didn’t score. That’s the same thing that happened when we played at Mahomet and they beat us by nine points.
“I thought we were patient and did what we wanted to do,” Thompson added. “We reversed the ball, made their zone shift and got some great looks. We just didn’t make many of our shots.”
Kayle Niebrugge got a bucket and Konkel added a pair of free throws to expand the margin to 20 points, 42-22, and Mahomet-Seymour never got closer than 18 the rest of the way.
Lexie Niebrugge finished with 18 points to lead the scoring attack and Schumacher turned in a double-double. She scored 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
“Kaitlyn really hustled tonight and got after it,” Thompson noted. “She was playing hurt and still got on the floor and played hard. She really gutted it out. I’m proud of her effort.”
The Lady Shoes shot 37 percent overall, making 20-of-54 shots. They made 4-for-15 from long range and 8-of-10 from the foul line. They held a commanding 31-16 rebounding advantage and forced 14 turnovers.
The Lady Shoes improved to 13-5 overall and 9-4 in the Apollo Conference. They will travel to Mt. Zion to finish Apollo Conference play Thursday night and then end its season Saturday at home against Paris.
