If there was any doubt, the St. Anthony and Teutopolis girls tennis teams proved they can play with the state’s elite.
The Lady Bulldogs finished fifth and the Lady Shoes ninth at the IHSA State Tennis Tournament, played Thursday through Saturday at multiple locations in the Chicago area.
Chicago University was the state champion with 33 team points. St. Anthony finished with 14 points and T-Town earned 9.
The Lady Shoes’ doubles team of Ali Brumleve/Macy Probst had the best local performance, finishing 5-2 overall and claiming sixth place.
Effingham St. Anthony’s Emilee Mossman went 4-2, as did the Lady Bulldogs duo of Allison Kowalke/Averee Greene. They both finished in a tie for seventh place.
T-Town’s Diana Mossman also competed in singles and went 1-2 overall.
Brumleve/Probst won three straight matches Thursday to reach the quarterfinal round. They beat Lilli Hansen/Karina Bonilla (Chicago Heights), 6-0, 6-0; Ashlen Deluca/Nicole Knackstedt (Highland), 6-2, 6-1; and Olivia Hamm/Ellie Howland (Wheaton Academy), 7-6, 7-3.
On Friday, they opened with a three-set defeat to Isabella Kellemeier/Emilee Pak (Chicago University). The scores were 2-6, 6-4, 3-6.
In the consolation bracket, they won their first two matches – 6-2, 6-1 over Natalie Muldowney/MiaBella Provenzano (Rockford Boylan); and 6-3, 6-2 over St. Anthony’s Kowalke/Averee.
In the consolation finals, Brumleve/Probst won the opening set 6-2, but then lost 4-6, 6-7 to Ella Marvel/Regan O’Fallon (Ottawa).
Emilee Mossman also opened with three straight wins in singles play. She beat Kate Feldman (Highland), 6-0, 6-0; Nicole Szidik (Marion), 6-1, 6-1; and Cassandra Lee (Elmhurst Timothy Christian), 6-1, 6-3.
In the quarterfinals, Mossman was defeated by Emma Davis (New Lennox Providence) in two close sets. The scores were 4-6, 6-7.
She then split her two matches in the consolation bracket. Mossman beat Savannah Webb (Richmond Burton), 6-1, 6-0; but then lost 1-6, 3-6 to Daniella Nenadovich (Lisle Benet Academy) in the semifinals.
The doubles team of Kowalke/Greene followed the exact same pattern, opening with three straight victories. They beat Clair Moore/Abigail Lee (Quincy Notre Dame), 6-3, 6-2; Maggie Kraft/Brooke Martin (Normal University), 6-3, 6-2; and Angela Mathew/Rachel Zilligen (Lisle Benet Academy), 6-2, 6-0.
They suffered their first defeat in the quarterfinals, losing 2-6, 3-6 to Alyssa Batcheler/Alice Mihas (Chicago Latin).
In consolation play, Kowalke/Greene split their matches. They started with a 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 win over Maggie Kraft/Brooke Martin (Normal University); and then dropped their match to T-Town’s Brumleve/Probst.
Diana Mossman dropped her first match to Emma Baker (Chicago University). The scores were 0-6, 0-6.
In consolation play, Mossman beat Brooke Akrami (Palos Heights), 6-0, 6-2; and was then defeated by Taylor Disharoon (Dunlap), 0-6, 2-6.
The Teutopolis Lady Shoes ended their dual meet season undefeated after posting an 8-1 win at home Monday over St. Thomas More.
In dual meets this fall, T-Town finished with a perfect 12-0 record.

The Lady Shoes will play in the St. Anthony Class 1A Sectional on Friday. The Effingham Lady Hearts and St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs will also compete in that sectional.
Both Teutopolis and St. Anthony will be represented this weekend at the ISHA State Girls Tennis Tournament.
Both schools will send a singles player and a doubles team to the state tourney, which will be played Thursday, Friday and Saturday at various sites in the Chicago area.
They earned state tourney berths by playing well in the St. Anthony Class 1A Sectional.
For the Lady Shoes, the doubles team of Ali Brumleve/Macy Probst captured first place, while Diana Mossman was third in singles.
Those results, plus a couple additional wins by other teammates helped Teutopolis capture the sectional championship with 23 team points, narrowly beating St. Anthony, who had 22. Effingham was ninth with four points, but didn’t qualify anyone for state.
For St. Anthony, Emilee Mossman was the singles champ, while the doubles team of Allison Kowalke/Averee Greene was second.
