Andrew Wetzel led three Mattoon players in double figures with 20 points. Jean added 14 and Smith chipped in with 13.
Wendling shared game-high scoring honors with 20 points, while Bockhorn had 12 and Kellams 11. It was Wendling’s first varsity start of the season.
“Not a bad showing,” Farmer said. “In practice and the past couple games, he’s been doing some good things for us. Hayden does a lot of things right, plus he’s relentless. He plays hard. And he really produced offensively for us today.”
The Hearts dipped to 0-3 in the tourney and 2-12 on the season. Their final tournament game will be at 10 a.m. Saturday. They will face Belvidere. That game will be played in the auxiliary gym at EHS.
Seneca 64, Effingham 45
The Seneca Fighting Irish used a big second half to break open a tie game, en route to a 64-45 win over Effingham late Saturday afternoon.
The two teams battled to a 26-26 tie during the first half. But the Fighting Irish then outscored EHS 21-12 in the third period and 17-7 in the final eight minutes to seize control.
Paxton Giertz scored 19 points to lead Seneca, while Hayden Wendling scored 14 to pace the Hearts.
Effingham is now 2-13 on the season.
Seneca will face Charleston at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the auxiliary gym at EHS.
