St. Anthony boys win invitational

As it turns out, St. Anthony golf coach Phil Zaccari was a bit prophetic.

“We talked the other day about playing every hole because one stroke can make the difference,” Zaccari noted. “And sure enough, it happened.”

The Bulldogs put together a strong team effort Friday afternoon and came away with a one-stroke victory over Mattoon to claim first place in the Stan Adkins Charleston Invitational, played at the Charleston Country Club.

Thomas Chojnicki and Jonathan Willenborg both shot 77, helping SAHS to a 322 team total, just ahead of Mattoon’s 323. Sullivan was third in the 11-team field with 332 strokes and Effingham finished eighth at 368.

For the Bulldogs, Michael Martelli fired an 83 and Lane Ludwig finished with an 85 to complete the team score. Charlie Wegman (87), Grant Nuxoll (95) and Aidan Tegeler (102) also competed.

“This was a great way to finish our regular season,” Zaccari said. “Overall, we played pretty well grinding out a victory. I’m very proud of the way our players competed. It’s a nice win that gives us some momentum going into regionals.”

For Effingham, Colby Haynes shot 90, Max Woelfer 91, Ryker Schneider 93 and Preston Latch 94 to complete the team score. Nick Burgess (103) and Ethan Ritz (106) also played.
