St. Anthony scored two goals in the first 15 minutes Thursday, en route to an 8-0 shutout over Christ Our Rock in a second-round game of the Teutopolis/St. Anthony Soccer Invitational.

Luke Swingler, after passes from Jack Elder and Reilly Ashton, scored those first two goals. But before the first half was over, Jack Elder, Wade Lawrence and Will Swingler added goals to give the Bulldogs a 5-0 lead at intermission. Lawrence, Ashton and Luke Swingler had assists for those last three goals.

Just a minute into the second half, Luke Swingler made a nice pass to Kevin Gonzalez, who found the back of the net. Grace Hakman, on an assist from Will Swingler, scored her first goal of the season to make it 7-0 and St. Anthony completed the scoring with a goal by Ashton off a pass from Will Swingler.

Luke Swingler, who scored two goals and had two assists, was named the team’s Offensive Player of the Match, while Will Fonner was named Defensive Player of the Match. Fonner had 10 steals.

“We played well,” said St. Anthony coach Martin Reyes. “We were able to push our players to play other positions. Our defense continues to grow and our midfielder’s chemistry continues to get better.

“We need to work on communication and putting the ball in the back of the net when we have the opportunities,” Reyes added. “I’m very proud of the team.”

The tournament will conclude Saturday with five matches at both the St. Anthony and Teutopolis fields.

The Bulldogs will face Pinckneyville at 11:15 a.m. at home and then play the Wooden Shoes at 3 p.m. in Teutopolis.

T-Town dropped a 4-1 decision to Mt. Carmel Thursday. The lone goal was scored by Linus Tannery on a penalty kick.

The Shoes will play Altamont at 12:15 p.m. at St. Anthony, before returning home to face the Bulldogs.
