The St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs managed just two hits, but made them count Thursday, coming away with a 5-0 victory at home over Altamont.
Both of St. Anthony’s hits came in the third inning. With two outs, Addie Wernsing walked and Hailey Niebrugge singled. A wild pitch accounted for the first run and Abbi Hatton then connected for a two-run homer to stake the hosts to a 3-0 lead.
That was all the support Sydney Kibler and Wernsing needed. The duo combined to throw a four-hit shutout with Kibler getting the win. She pitched the first four innings, allowing four hits. Wernsing pitched the final three innings and didn’t allow a baserunner. Neither pitcher walked a batter and they combined for 14 strikeouts, both recording seven.
Altamont’s Grace Lemke also pitched a strong game. She gave up just two hits, walked five and struck out 14.
The Lady Bulldogs added two more tallies in the sixth without getting a hit. A walk, an error, a passed ball and ground out helped give SAHS a little more cushion.
St. Anthony, winners of six straight, improved to 18-2. They will return to action tonight (Friday). They will play Teutopolis in the annual Cross Creek Rivalry – weather permitting. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Evergreen Hollow Park.
