As Yogi Berra once said – “It ain’t over till it’s over.”

And Mick Niebrugge proved that Thursday afternoon.

Down to his team’s final out, Niebrugge blasted a two-run walk-off homer, giving the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes a 3-2 eight-inning win at home over Mr. Zion.

The visiting Braves scored an unearned run in the top of the eighth to take a 2-1 lead. But Brett Kreke drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the inning. The next two batters were retired, bringing Niebrugge to the plate. After the first pitch missed the strike zone, Niebrugge connected on the next offering and sent it sailing over the centerfield fence for the game-winner.

It ended a game that had been dominated by pitching. Mt. Zion’s Connor Fox pitched seven innings and allowed just four hits and a run. Logan Lynch relieved in the eighth and took the loss.

T-Town’s Austin Borries was outstanding. The sophomore righthander went all eight innings. He gave up seven hits and two runs – only one earned. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out nine while throwing 110 pitches.

The Shoes took a 1-0 lead in the fourth. With one out, Mick Niebrugge walked and Borries singled. Mitch Koester then followed with an RBI single. The Braves tied the game in the fifth.

Teutopolis, winners of 8 of its last 10 games, improved to 13-6. The Shoes will travel to Freeburg and play two games Saturday. They will face Freeburg at 10 a.m. and Waterloo Gibault at noon.
