Evan Wermert’s three-run homer highlighted a seven-run second inning, sparking the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes to a season-opening 12-1 win at home over Robinson Thursday afternoon.

Wermert also had an RBI triple, helping the Shoes open their spring baseball season in impressive style.

On the mound, Derek Konkel and Cade Buehnerkemper combined on a three-hitter. Konkel went the first 2.2 innings to get the win and Buehnerkemper hurled the final 2.1 innings. They combined for eight strikeouts and two walks.

T-Town jumped on top in the opening inning. Sam Bushur led off with a base hit and one-out later, Wermert ripped a triple, driving in the first run of the game. An error allowed Wermert to score and give the Shoes a quick 2-0 edge.

They blew the game open in the second.

Konkel had a lead-off single and Dylan Pruemer was hit by a pitch to get things started. After a passed ball, Mitch Althoff delivered a run-scoring single and Bushur followed with another base hit, driving in two more. After Kayden Althoff drew a walk, Wermert followed by a three-run blast over the center-field fence.

Pruemer later added another RBI single to boost the lead to 9-0 after just two innings of play. THS added another run in the third and two more tallies in the fourth to wrap up the victory.

Bushur, Wermert and Evan Addis each had two hits to lead the nine-hit attack. Wermert finished with four RBI and Bushur added a pair.

The Shoes will return to action Saturday with two games at home. They will face Pleasant Plains at 10 a.m. and then play Harrisburg at 2 p.m.
