The Teutopolis Lady Shoes have reached the semifinals of the Scott Credit Union Girls Basketball Tournament in Highland.

They accomplished that by posting a 52-41 victory Monday night over Belleville West.

After a slow start and falling behind 10-9 after eight minutes, the Lady Shoes went on a 17-8 scoring surge to build a 26-18 lead at halftime. It was still an eight-point margin, 37-29, heading into the final quarter. T-Town then outscored Belleville West 15-11 to seal the win.

Lexie Niebrugge connected on three shots from behind the arc and scored 19 points to lead the THS scoring attack. Sophomore Kaitlyn Schumacher had her best scoring game of the season, pumping in 11 points. Niebrugge and Schumacher also led the team with six rebounds.

The Lady Shoes improved to 16-5 on the season. They will now face a 21-2 Civic Memorial team in the semifinals. That game is scheduled for 8 p.m. Wednesday in Highland.

These two teams met just eight days ago in Bethalto. The Lady Eagles, who are ranked No. 4 in the Class 3A poll, defeated T-Town 44-35.

The Teutopolis Lady Shoes opened tournament play in impressive fashion Saturday, posting a 55-28 victory over Triad.

It was a first-round game in the 34th annual Scott Credit Union Girls Basketball Tournament in Highland.

The Lady Shoes will play again today (Monday). They will face Belleville West at 8:30 p.m.

T-Town built a 15-10 lead after the first eight minutes and then broke it open in the second quarter. The Lady Shoes outscored Triad 13-1 to take a 28-11 lead to the locker room at halftime.

It was more of the same in the third period. The THS girls went on a 17-4 scoring run in the third quarter to extend their advantage to 45-15.

The Lady Shoes had three players in double figures. Lexie Niebrugge and Olivia Niemerg both scored 14 points and Ciara Roepke added 11. Niebrugge also had a team-high six rebounds and Roepke came up with five steals.

Teutopolis improved to 15-5 on the season.

Teutopolis girls basketball coach Laurie Thompson knows their schedule in January is going to be a difficult one.

After already playing undefeated Paris twice, the Lady Shoes faced a challenging test Monday night at Civic Memorial in Bethalto.

The Class 3A Lady Eagles improved to 18-2 after posting a 44-35 decision over T-Town.

The Lady Shoes played the state’s No. 4 ranked team strong. They led 12-9 after the opening eight minutes and trailed by just a single point, 19-18, at intermission.

Civic Memorial then got eight points from Anna Hall in the third quarter and eight from Kourtland Tyus in the final period to come away with the victory. The Lady Eagles led 29-25 after three periods and then made 8-of-10 foul shots in the final eight minutes to maintain their lead down the stretch.

Tyus finished with 21 points to lead all scorers.

The Lady Shoes didn’t have a player reach double figures. Lexie Niebrugge scored nine points and Olivia Niemerg had seven. Karsyn Mette led the team with nine rebounds.

T-Town, now 14-5, will return to action Saturday in the Scott Credit Union Highland Girls Basketball Tournament. The Lady Shoes will play Triad at 2:30 p.m.

ET Sports Report

The Teutopolis game plan was fairly simple.

Offensively, the goal was to get the ball inside repeatedly and score 40 points from the paint.

The Shoes finished with 14.

Defensively, the goal was to prevent Madison’s Javonnie Moore from getting the ball and shooting 3-pointers.

He made six threes in the first half, en route to a 34-point performance.

Needless to say, it wasn’t a good night for the home team at J.H. Griffin Gymnasium.

The visiting Trojans jumped out to a quick double-digit lead, expanded it to 21 points in the first half, withstood a second-half comeback and came away with a 62-55 victory on a foggy Tuesday night.

“Our toughness sucked tonight,” said THS coach Chet Reeder. “We simply weren’t tough enough to be successful. For the second game in a row, we completely ignored the scouting report and refused to follow the game plan.

“With our size advantage, we needed to score 40 points inside tonight,” Reeder added. “But we refused to go inside. On our first four possessions, we didn’t get the ball inside once. If we’re going to be strictly a jump shooting team, we’re not going to go very far. But that’s my fault. We’ve been too lax in practice. But that will change.”

The Central A&M Raiders are one of the strongest and most talented Class 1A basketball teams in the state.

And they have been for a couple years.

A&M has gone 55-13 the past two seasons, advancing to the super sectional two years ago and getting third place in the state last March.

This season, the Raiders are the favorites to bring home the state championship and have spent several weeks atop the 1A poll. Their only two losses came in the Effingham-Teutopolis Christmas Classic (Champaign Centennial and Pleasant Plains), and it resulted in them falling to No. 3.

But two minutes into the second period Saturday, the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes owned an 11-point lead over A&M. The Shoes knocked down six 3-pointers in the first period and then got back-to-back scores from Matthew Deters and Mitch Hardiek to open a 26-15 advantage at the 6:01 mark of the second quarter.

But then things changed.

A&M’s first-team all-stater, Connor Heaton, scored seven straight points to begin an incredible 25-4 run that stretched into the third quarter and was the spark the Raiders needed to post an 80-64 win in the marquee game of the 8th annual St. Anthony Shootout.
