Goalie Seth Emmerich proved to be real stingy Saturday, failing to allow a single goal in two matches, helping the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes post a pair of wins and finish third overall in the St. Anthony/Teutopolis Soccer Tournament.

The Shoes opened with a 2-0 shutout over Altamont Saturday and then blanked St. Anthony 5-0 in the event’s final match.

Kaleb Bannick had two goals for T-Town against the Bulldogs, while Alex Deters, Derek Deters and Alessio Bucciarelli each scored one to help Teutopolis improve to 3-2 on the season.

“We tried to play a defensive game since we knew Teutopolis plays a good game, plus some of our players were not 100 percent,” said St. Anthony coach Martin Reyes.”

St. Anthony goalie Ivan Dong had six saves in the first half, but the Shoes still scored twice to take a 2-0 edge at intermission. THS added three more goals in the second half against Bulldogs goalie Reilly Ashton, who also had four saves.

Mt. Carmel and Newton both went 4-0, but Mt. Carmel won the tie-breaker to claim the tournament championship.

In Saturday’s first match, the Bulldogs were topped 2-1 by Pinckneyville.

A goal by Jack Elder, after a throw-in by Aston, gave St. Anthony a 1-0 lead early in the second half. But Pinckneyville responded by scoring twice, the winning goal coming midway through the half.

“It was a very physical game,” Reyes noted. “We had a lot of players hurting or cramping by the end of the game. Overall, I thought we did well in this tournament and I’m confident we’ll get better the more we play.”

St. Anthony will return to action Tuesday with a home match against Effingham.

Teutopolis will also play at home Tuesday against Charleston.
