The Teutopolis Lady Shoes got three home runs – from Olivia Copple, Daisha Piedra and Courtney Gibson – and powered their way to a 13-3 win over Champaign Central at home Friday afternoon, stretching their winning streak to seven.
They saw the streak snapped in the second game, however, as Newton’s Kayla Kocher reminded everyone why she is one of the best pitchers in the area. She threw a four-hitter on the mound and also drove in two runs, helping the Lady Eagles post an 11-1 win in five innings.
In the opening contest, the Lady Shoes struck quick. In the bottom of the first inning, Erin Althoff, who had three hits in the 10-hit attack, led off with a base hit. She then stole second and third and scored on a ground ball by Emily Konkel. Piedra then walked and Gibson followed with a two-run homer.
Champaign Central tied the game in the top of the second, but THS took the lead for good by pushing four runs across in the bottom of the frame. That inning highlighted a two-run shot by Copple.
The Lady Shoes scored two runs in third, fourth and fifth, with Piedra belting a solo homer in the fourth.
Jordan Goeckner went all five innings to get the win. She allowed seven hits and three runs, while walking two and striking out three.
Newton erupted for six first-inning runs to take early control. The Lady Eagles combined one walk, one error and five hits, including a two-run triple by Kocher.
T-Town’s only run came in the bottom of the first. Althoff led off with a double and scored on Kaylee Niebrugge’s two-out RBI single. The Lady Shoes had only two more hits the final four innings.
Kocher walked just one and struck out four. Gibson took the loss for THS. She allowed 11 hits and 11 runs, although six of those were unearned. She walked three and struck out three.
The Lady Shoes, now 12-3, will return to action Monday with a game at Effingham.
