The Mahomet-Seymour Lady Bulldogs banged out 23 hits and scored 21 runs en route to a doubleheader sweep Saturday at Effingham.

Karley Yergler pitched a shutout in the opener and MSHS belted three home runs in a 10-0, five-inning victory. Then the Lady Bullldogs used a big seven-run fifth to pull away for an 11-6 decision in the nightcap.

Yergler allowed just four hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out 11 in the first game. She also hit a two-run homer in the first inning. Abbey Akers added another two-run shot in that opening inning, plus Maddie Cortez blasted a two-run homer in the fourth.

The Lady Hearts had four singles in the game by Grace Bushur, Tori Budde, Abby Cunningham and Sidney Donaldson.

In the second game, Effingham erupted for five runs in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead. Elena Niebrugge singled and Jennifer Jamison smacked a two-run homer to get the inning started. Jerzi Bierman then singled, Daelyn Dunston walked and Bushur singled to drive in a run. Another run scored on an error and Bushur scored on a double steal.

But the Lady Bulldogs then combined six hits and a hit batter to push across seven runs in the fifth.

The Lady Hearts are now 2-6 overall and 1-3 in Apollo Conference. They are scheduled to play today (Monday) at Hillsboro.
