Two St. Anthony boys advance to sectional
St. Anthony’s Jonathon Willenborg and Thomas Chojnicki both turned in solid rounds Tuesday afternoon and earned the opportunity to play another day.
Willenborg shot a 78 and Chojnicki turned in an 81 during Tuesday Class 1A Mt. Carmel Regional Golf Tournament, played at Berwick Golf Course in Mt. Carmel. That qualified both of the golfers to play in the Ziegler-Royalton Sectional, scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 13.
As a team, the Bulldogs fell just one shot shy of advancing to the sectional. Oblong finished with a team total of 329 strokes and Carmi finished runner-up with a 330 total. St. Anthony came in at 331.
There were 10 teams in the regional. Altamont finished 7th with 364 strokes and Teutopolis was 10th at 395.
For the Bulldogs, Lane Ludwig shot 85 and Aidan Tegeler 87 to round out the team score. Charlie Wegman (88) and Michael Martelli (89) also competed.
For the Shoes, Gabe Schlink shot 97, Zac Niebrugge 98, Andy Niebrugge 100 and Hayden Jansen 100 to complete the team score. Jack Poelker (103) and Ethan Thoele (103) also played.
Effingham’s Woelfer advances to sectional
Max Woelfer will represent the Effingham Hearts in the sectional golf tournament.
Woelfer turned in his best round of the season Tuesday, finishing with an 18-hole total of 82 and will play in the Class 2A Centralia Sectional on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
As a team, according to Coach Jeff Shafer, EHS almost pulled off “a shocker.”
“With six holes to play, we were actually looking like we had a real shot to advance,” Shafer said. “But Paris just outplayed us the last six holes and ended up beating us by nine shots. But we were right there. We ended up with our best score of the year.”
The Hearts finished in fourth place at the Paris Regional with a team total of 357 strokes. Mattoon was the regional champ with 330 strokes and Paris was runner-up at 348. There were nine schools that competed.
For EHS, Colby Haynes shot 87, Ryker Schneider 90 and Nick Burgess to complete the team score. Ethan Ritz (99) and Preston Latch (109) also competed.
“This group was a lot of fun to coach and we showed a lot of improvement from Day 1 to today,” Schafer said. “I’m really proud of them all. We’re going to miss Max and Preston next year. They both did a great job. My other seniors were also awesome to have out this year.”
