Three goals set.

Three goals accomplished.

Yes, it’s been a special season for the St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs.

As virtually every coach does, Aaron Rios established some benchmarks for his team before the season ever began.

  • Win 20 games. They are currently at 22.
  • Win the National Trail Conference. They shared the league crown.
  • Do well in the postseason. That got checked off the list Friday night.

The Lady Bulldogs had a sluggish shooting performance, but hit some key shots, including 10 free throws in the final 5½ minutes, to post a 61-57 victory over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City in the championship game of the Class 1A Cumberland Regional in Toledo.

“I am so proud of this group,” Rios, who is in his third year at the helm of the St. Anthony girls program, said. “These girls started focusing last summer and they’ve stayed turned in ever since. It’s been amazing. They’ve helped re-build a winning culture here. St. Anthony basketball is back.”

The St. Anthony Bulldogs will roll into the postseason on a four-game winning streak.

They stretched that streak to four with a 70-62 victory Friday night at Casey-Westfield.

The Bulldogs had four players in double figures and led at the end of each stop.

Craig Croy scored 10 points in the first eight minutes and SAHS held a slim 17-16 lead. Kyle Stewart then pumped in 11 points in the second period, helping the Bulldogs build a 38-30 advantage at halftime. The Warriors got within 52-47 heading into the fourth period, but St. Anthony went 6-for-6 at the foul line down the stretch to seal the win.

Croy finished with a game-high 19 points, while Stewart scored 17, Griffin Sehy contributed 13 and Adam Rudibaugh added 12.

The Bulldogs are now 18-12 on the season overall. They open regional play today (Saturday) at home against Mulberry Grove. That game will start at 6 p.m. at The Enlow Center. It is one of four opening-round games of the Class 1A Patoka Regional. The four winners will advance and play Wednesday night in Patoka.

The St. Anthony Bulldogs have 12 losses this season.

However, in several of those games, they had excellent chances of gaining a “W” instead.

But whether it was a costly turnover, missed assignment or inability to hit a crucial shot, they have let some potential wins get away from them.

That almost happened again Saturday.

After building a 16-point halftime lead, they saw that lead evaporate rather quickly and even trailed in the third period.

But this time, St. Anthony was the team that made the big plays and clutch shots down the stretch. And after making six straight free throws in the final 38 seconds, the Bulldogs had a 50-40 victory over Mattoon in the third game of the 9th annual Wooden Shoes Shootout in Teutopolis.

“Hopefully, this will give the boys some confidence and let them know we can win games like this,” said SAHS coach Cody Rincker. “I thought we played more passive during that stretch in the third quarter, but also thought we showed a lot of maturity and growth in how we responded. We didn’t fold. We made plays. Hopefully, we can continue to build on this the last week of the regular season.”

There were two big factors in St. Anthony’s win – one was in the game plan; the other was not.

Lucy Fearday joined the 1,000-point club and the St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs earned a berth in the regional championship game.

Both were accomplished Monday night when St. Anthony posted a 49-30 decision over Dieterich in a semifinal game of the Class 1A Toledo (Cumberland) Regional.

It will set up a third showdown between the Lady Bulldogs and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City for the regional title. The Lady Bobcats pulled out a 51-50 win over SAHS in December, but St. Anthony came back to beat CHBC 60-47 in the National Trail Conference Tournament.

The regional championship is set for 7 p. m. Friday in Toledo.

Fearday notched her 1,000th point at the 5:54 mark of the second period, helping the Lady Bulldogs build a 22-13 halftime lead. In the third quarter, they went on an 18-9 run to expand the margin to 40-22 heading into the final eight minutes.

Fearday finished with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Riley Guy, who reached the 1,000-point plateau earlier in the season, added 17 points. It was the first time in school history that two players scored their 1,000th point in the same season.

The Lady Bulldogs, who won for the 13th time in their last 14 games, improved to 21-9 on the season. They will be looking for their first regional title since 2019.

Monday night, it was Riley Guy pouring in a school-record 41 points.

Thursday night, it was Lucy Fearday’s turn to have a big game.

The junior post player turned in an impressive double-double, pumping in 32 points and pulling down 11 rebounds to help the St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs run away for a 63-31 victory at Newton in the regular season finale.

Fearday scored eight points in the opening quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs only held a slim 10-8 lead. But that gap started to widen in the second period. Five different players scored, helping SAHS go on a 16-8 scoring surge and build a 26-16 cushion by halftime.

St. Anthony increased its lead to 42-23 after three quarters, and with Fearday scoring 15 points in the final eight minutes, the Lady Bulldogs closed the game on a 21-8 run to finish with the 32-point victory.

Abbi Hatton also had a double-double, recording 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs finished the regular season on a roll. They have won 12 of their last 13 games and are now 20-9 overall. They will now enter postseason play and compete in the Class 1A Toledo (Cumberland) Regional. They are the No. 2 seed and will face either Casey-Westfield or Dieterich at 6 p.m. Monday.
