Due to the weather forecast and the possibility of significant snowfall, the schedule for the 87th annual National Trail Conference Tournament this week has been altered.

It will only affect the games scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. Both of the Wednesday games have been cancelled and will now be played on Tuesday night. It will also result in the Tuesday games being played earlier than originally scheduled.

The games scheduled for tonight (Monday), Thursday, Friday and Saturday remain the same.

Hard to believe these same two teams met just nine days ago.

On that night, the St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs took control early and rolled to a 40-point victory, 77-37.

But it was a different story Saturday night.

The Neoga Lady Indians made some changes, got a clutch three-pointer from Allison Sampson to force overtime and then went on an 8-0 run to post a 58-50 victory and claim the championship of the National Trail Conference Girls Basketball Tournament in Beecher City.

From the outset, the game was totally different than the one played at SAHS less than two weeks ago. On that night, it was 24-10 after the first eight minutes and an 18-point margin at halftime.

The two teams were tied 13-13 after the first period Saturday night and St. Anthony held a slim 28-27 lead at halftime. The Lady Bulldogs stretched the margin to five points, 42-37, heading into the final period, but the Lady Indians stayed close and sent the game to the extra session on the late three by Sampson.

Don’t let the final score fool you.

It was closer than the score might indicate.

Yes, the St. Anthony Bulldogs led from start to finish. And, yes, there were a couple times they threatened to pull away.

But a scrappy Windsor/Stew-Stras team managed to stay within striking distance until the final three minutes of the game.

On a night the St. Anthony basketball program celebrated a milestone achievement, the Bulldogs used an 11-2 run over a three-minute span in the fourth quarter to secure a 62-47 victory at home over the Hatchets in a National Trail Conference contest.

“Credit Windsor/Stew-Stras,” said St. Anthony coach Cody Rincker. “We’d build a lead and then they would come back. They have a lot of seniors that are battle-tested and have done a lot of winning. They never quit playing hard and kept executing their game plan. They just wouldn’t go away.”

All-stater Ty Pence pumped in 31 points Saturday, leading the St. Joe-Ogden Spartans to a 61-38 victory at home over St. Anthony.

Pence, a 6’4” senior, who has committed to play at Illinois State, knocked down three shots from behind the arc and scored 16 points in the first period, helping the Spartans build an 18-5 advantage. By halftime, SJO was on top, 28-13.

The Bulldogs were within 12 points, 41-29, heading into the fourth period, but the hosts outscored SAHS 20-9 in the final eight minutes to secure the win and improve to 16-4.

Brock Fearday was the only St. Anthony player to crack double figures, finishing with 12 points. Griffin Sehy and Ryan Schmidt both scored eight.

The Bulldogs dipped to 15-8 on the season. They will now play on Wednesday in a quarterfinal round game of the National Trail Conference Tournament in Altamont. They are the No. 3 seed and will face No. 6 Brownstown/St. Elmo at approximately 7:45 p.m.

It will be No. 1 vs. No. 2 in the championship game of the National Trail Conference Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday night.

Top-seeded Neoga and No. 2 St. Anthony both posted wins Thursday night and will now meet in the championship game, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday at Beecher City High School.

Neoga advanced with a 49-33 win over North Clay.

The Lady Bulldogs also earned a birth in the title game with a 52-43 decision over Brownstown/St. Elmo.

But it didn’t come easy. SAHS outscored the Lady Bombers 21-5 in the fourth quarter to rally for the victory. BSE led 38-31 after three quarters of play.

The Lady Bombers led 14-8 after the opening eight minutes and 25-24 at intermission.

It was a seven-point deficit when the Lady Bulldogs began their comeback in the final period. Stacie Vonderheide went 6-for-6 from the foul line and scored 10 points and Lucy Fearday scored five more to spark the rally. St. Anthony went 13-for-14 from the free throw line in that last quarter.

Lexi Seabaugh led BSE with 12 points.

Vonderheide led all scorers with 18 points, while Nancy Ruholl and Fearday both had 13 for the Lady Bulldogs.

St. Anthony, now 19-4, will face Neoga for the second time in nine days. The Lady Bulldogs beat the Lady Indians 77-37 on January 12.
