Stacie Vonderheide and Addyson Rios combined to score 44 points Thursday night, helping the St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs get a big road win, a 59-52 victory over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City.

Macie Rodman scored 10 of her 16 points in the opening eight minutes, helping the Lady Bobcats build a 21-13 lead. But Vonderheide pumped in 10 points and Rios added nine more, as the Lady Bulldogs went on a 25-13 scoring run to take a 38-34 advantage at halftime.

St. Anthony was still on top 49-43 going into the final period and then hung on for the win. Vonderheide had six points in the fourth quarter.

Vonderheide had a double-double, finishing with 26 points and 10 rebounds. She also had seven steals and seven assists. Rios scored 18 points, pulled down four rebounds and also had five steals. In addition to Rodman, Baya Fingo and Ruby Stuckemeyer were both in double figures for CHBC, scoring 12 and 10 points respectively.

The Lady Bobcats dropped to 6-5 overall and 1-3 in the National Trail Conference. The Lady Bulldogs improved to 8-2 overall and are now 3-1 in league play.

St. Anthony will return to action Monday night. It will be the Cross Creek Rivalry, as the Lady Bulldogs will play at Teutopolis.

Sometimes, it doesn’t take long to determine how a game is going to go.

That was certainly the case Tuesday night at the Enlow Center.

Take Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City (CHBC) for example. On their first eight possessions, the Bobcats missed one shot and turned the ball over seven times.

The St. Anthony Bulldogs took advantage, building a 14-0 lead in less than 2½ minutes, and were never threatened, finishing with an 81-46 victory in a National Tral Conference contest at home.

“I thought our intensity, focus and tenacity set the tone for the game,” SAHS coach Cody Rincker said.

Ryan Schmidt scored 10 of those early points and Brock Fearday had the other four. St. Anthony’s full-court pressure caused 10 first-quarter turnovers, helping the hosts build the quick double-digit lead. By the end of the first eight minutes, Schmidt had 17 points and the Bulldogs owned a 32-9 advantage.

But the second quarter was a different story.

“Give CHBC credit,” Rincker noted. “They made some adjustments and did a nice job of making shots after they broke our press and the guys were scrambling to find their guy to guard.”

Encouragement.

That’s the word Cody Rincker used to describe the halftime message to his team Friday night.

St. Anthony had a halftime lead, but the coach wasn’t overly pleased with his team’s performance.

“Let’s just say we gave them some encouragement at halftime,” Rincker said following the game.

An “encouraged” Bulldog squad responded immediately. They scored the first eight points of the third quarter, igniting a 19-2 run that turned a competitive, seven-point game into a rout.

When it was all over, St. Anthony had opened National Trail Conference play with an impressive 70-38 win at home over North Clay.

“We reminded the kids this was the first conference game and an opportunity to make a statement,” Rincker said. “In the NTC, no lead is safe. If you let up, they’ll come right back at you. We did what we needed to do to be successful.”

The Bulldogs never trailed in the game and led by as many as 10 points in the opening 16 minutes. But thanks to the hot shooting of Jesse Weidner, the Cardinals stayed within striking distance. Weidner’s fourth basket from behind the arc had North Clay within 31-24 at intermission.

But within 90 seconds into the second half, SAHS was in total control.

About 2½ minutes into the second half, the game appeared to be well in-hand for Altamont.

But for many of the fans – especially those in orange and black – a special moment was about to happen.

Their senior standout, Grace Nelson, drove to the basket and scored. It’s something they’ve seen many times during her brilliant career. But this bucket – at the 5:22 mark of the third period -- actually brought a halt to the contest.

You see, that shot put Nelson in the 2,000-point club. The game was stopped briefly to recognize that accomplishment.

She needed 25 points entering Monday night’s contest. She finished with 43, helping the Lady Indians post a 78-67 victory over the St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs in a key National Trail Conference matchup at the Enlow Center.

“Grace is an extraordinary player,” said St. Anthony coach Aaron Rios following the game. “I’m happy for her. I’m so glad she had the opportunity to come back after her terrible injury last year.

“She’s an outstanding player and also has great character,” Rios added. “I’m very pleased to see how far she’s come and how well she represents our conference.”

The Lady Indians used a big second quarter, led by 20 points twice in the second half and withstood a couple surges to notch the win and remain unbeaten in conference play at 3-0.

Turnovers were costly for the Lady Bulldogs. St. Anthony held a slim 26-24 lead with 5:49 remaining in the second quarter. But the rest of the first half was all Altamont.

Stacie Vonderheide and Nancy Ruholl combined to score 40 points Thursday night, helping the St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs post a 72-48 victory at home over Windsor/Stew-Stras.

The Lady Bulldogs led throughout. They were on top 15-9 after the opening eight minutes and expanded that to 38-24 at halftime. The Lady Hatchets got within 53-43 after three quarters, but SAHS outscored their guests 19-5 in the final eight minutes to pull away.

Vonderheide finished with 23 points and Ruholl scored 17. Addysen Rios was also in double figures, adding 13 more. Vonderheide also grabbed 13 rebounds to finish with a double-double. In addition, she had seven assists and two steals.

The Lady Bulldogs improved to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the National Trail Conference. They will return to action Monday with a home game against Altamont.
