When a coach says his team just played its best game of the year, that is generally not good news for the opponent.

That was certainly the case Saturday evening.

The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes put on a defensive clinic, made over half of their shots and carried out the game plan to near perfection.

The only real question over the final three quarters was whether Paxton-Buckley-Loda would reach 20 points.

The Panthers finally reached that plateau, but there was only one minute left in the game.

By that time, the outcome had long been determined as the Shoes finished with a lopsided 55-20 win in the final game of the 9th annual Wooden Shoes Shootout.

“We knew they thrived on extra possessions from creating turnovers or getting offensive rebounds,” THS coach Chet Reeder explained. “We took care of the ball and gave them zero second chance opportunities. From start to finish, this was the best game we’ve played so far.”

From the outset, it was clear that T-Town was the best team on the floor. Even though the margin after the opening eight minutes was just eight points, 13-5, nobody in J.H. Griffin Gymnasium expected it to get any tighter.

And they were right.

For the first 22½ minutes, Zoe Cremens had taken one shot and missed it.

But over a 6-minute stretch between the third and fourth quarters, she took four more and made them all. And each one was from behind the arc.

Those were definitely the biggest shots of the night for the Teutopolis Lady Shoes.

As THS coach Laurie Thompson said, “We got on the Zoe train.”

Cremens knocked down two three-pointers in a row in the third period and added two more from long range in the final eight minutes, helping the Lady Shoes close out their regular season with a 54-45 win at home Thursday night over Fairfield.

The senior guard’s first three snapped a 12-0 run by the Lady Mules and knotted the game at 34-34 with 1:23 to play in the third period. Cremens hit another three 42 seconds later to give the hosts a lead they never relinquished.

Cremens opened the fourth quarter with another three-pointer and made it 4-for-4 with a three at the 4:39 mark to expand T-Town’s lead to 47-40.

“If Zoe doesn’t make those shots, we probably get beat,” Thompson said. “Those were huge shots, the main reason we won. But the reason why she got those looks was we finally attacked their zone and kicked the ball back out.”

It figured to be a good basketball game.

Neoga entered the contest with 21 wins and Teutopolis had already notched 17.

But it wasn’t.

The Lady Shoes jumped out to a double-digit lead, expanded it to almost 20 by halftime and rolled to a 59-28 decision at home Monday night.

Zoe Cremens helped T-Town get off to a fast start. She knocked down a pair of three-pointers and scored eight points, as the Lady Shoes bolted to a 19-9 lead after eight minutes of play. Emily Konkel scored six points and Cremens connected on another from behind the arc, helping the hosts outscore the Lady Indians 17-8 and take a comfortable 36-17 advantage to the locker room at halftime.

Teutopolis didn’t let up in the third quarter. It posted a 14-7 scoring edge to make it a 26-point bulge after three quarters before ending with the lopsided 31-point victory.

Cremens led three Lady Shoes in double figures with 13 points. Konkel finished with 12 and Kaylee Niebrugge added 11. Izzy Hardiek and Kaitlyn Schumacher contributed eight and seven points respectively, as T-Town ended with a balanced scoring attack.

Schumacher pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, as the Lady Shoes dominated the backboards, 29-17.

The Lady Shoes improved to 18-7 overall. They will now play their regular-season finale Thursday at home against Fairfield.

The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes used a big fourth quarter to pull away and post a 56-48 victory at home Tuesday night over Casey-Westfield.

It was the 20th win of the season for the T-Town boys.

The game was close throughout. The Shoes led 15-11 after the opening eight minutes and 23-21 at halftime. It was still a slim two-point margin, 35-33, entering the fourth quarter.

The Shoes made 9-of-10 free throws in the final period and got a three-pointer from Joey Ruholl, sparking a 21-15 scoring surge that secured the win.

Caleb Siemer had 13 points for T-Town, while Max Niebrugge added 12. Brendan Niebrugge chipped in with nine and Dylan Pruemer scored eight.

The Shoes improved to 20-7 with the win. They will be back in action at home Saturday as part of the 9th annual Wooden Shoes Shootout. They will play the final game of the day against Paxton-Buckley-Loda. That game is scheduled for approximately 5:30 p.m.

For the second game in a row, the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes got off to a slow start.

And for the second game in a row, they didn’t let that bother them.

On Friday night, T-Town hit only 1-of-10 shots, scored just six points and trailed St. Anthony by six after the opening quarter. But they came back to win by 11.

It was a sluggish start again Saturday, this time falling behind by 10 points to Robinson.

But the Shoes came alive in the second period and dominated the rest of the way, finishing with a 62-46 win at home over the Maroons.

After eight minutes of play, the Shoes were on the short of a 22-12 score. They then went on a 22-6 run in the second quarter to take control, building a 34-28 edge at intermission. They continued their strong play in the second half, expanding the lead to double digits.

Caleb Siemer paced the Shoes with a game-high 20 points, while Max Niebrugge added 12. Siemer also pulled down a team-high six rebounds and Max Niebrugge dished out five assists.

The Shoes improved to 19-7 with the win. They will be back in action at home Tuesday, hosting Casey-Westfield.
