Emily Konkel and Erin Althoff both had bases-loaded triples in the nine-run fifth inning Friday afternoon, helping the Teutopolis Lady Shoes rally for a 9-5 win at home over Mt. Zion.
When T-Town came to bat in the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Braves owned a 3-0 lead. The Lady Shoes had been shut out on one hit through the first four innings.
But things quickly changed.
Summer Wall walked, Olivia Copple reached on an error and Althoff singled to load the bases. Konkel followed with her bases-clearing triple to knot the score at 3-3. And that was just the beginning.
Daisha Piedra walked and Danielle Sarchet put THS on top with a ground ball that brought Konkel home. Two more runs scored on a wild pitch and an error. Then, Wall walked and Copple singled to load the bases again and Althoff came through with a two-out triple that drove in all three runners and give the hosts a 9-3 lead.
In that one inning, T-Town had four of its five hits, received three of its four walks and took advantage of two of Mt. Zion’s three errors in the game, while sending 13 batters to the plate.
The Lady Braves scored single tallies in both the sixth and seventh, but couldn’t overcome that nine-run explosion.
Courtney Gibson relieved in the fourth and earned the victory. She allowed eight hits and four runs over her four innings of work. Jordan Goeckner pitched the first three innings.
The Lady Shoes improved to 7-2 on the spring. They will return to action Monday with a home game against Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City.
