The top of the batting order proved to be the catalyst for the Mattoon Lady Green Wave.
The first three batters – Cadance McDaniel, Emma Longcor and Ivie Edwards – combined for eight hits and 11 RBI, leading Mattoon to a 16-5, five-inning win Tuesday afternoon at Teutopolis.
Edwards was 4-for-4 at the plate, including a homer run and three runs batted in, while Edwards and Longcor both had two hits and drove in four runs. One of Longcor’s hits was also a two-run homer.
The Lady Green Wave held a slim 2-1 lead until erupting for seven runs in the third. They added two more tallies in the fourth and then wrapped up their scoring with a four-run fifth.
The Lady Shoes got on the board in the bottom of the first when Emily Konkel belted a one-out homer.
They didn’t score again until the fifth. Olivia Copple led off the inning with a solo shot over the centerfield fence. With one out, Konkel triple and Diasha Piedra walked. Kaylee Niebrugge drove in one run with a double and Danielle Sarchet added a two-run double.
Courtney Gibson was the starter for T-Town and took the loss.
The Lady Shoes dipped to 15-6. They will be back in action Thursday at Cumberland County.
