Mt. Zion’s ability to score runs late in the game led to a doubleheader sweep Saturday at Teutopolis in an Apollo Conference match-up.

In the opener, the Lady Braves scored three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth and held on for a 6-4 win. Mt. Zion then pushed a run across in the top of the eighth to post a 4-3 victory in the nightcap to complete the sweep of the twin-bill.

In the first game, the Lady Shoes scored single tallies in the first and fourth. Lexie Niebrugge’s ground ball drove in Emily Konkel, who had tripled, in the opening inning. In the fourth, a walk, an error and a two-out single by Estella Mette put THS ahead, 2-1.

But Mt. Zion got a bases-clearing double by Dakota Harrison to take a 4-2 lead in the fifth and then added two more in the sixth.

The Lady Shoes made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Mette doubled and then scored on Erin Althoff’s two-out RBI single. After Konkel walked, Lexie Niebrugge drove in a run with a base hit. But Daischa Piedra flied out to end the threat.

Tia Probst pitched all seven innings and took the loss. She allowed nine hits and six runs, while walking four and striking out two.

T-Town needed another seventh-inning rally in the second game, coming to bat trailing 3-0.

With one out, Mette was hit by a pitch and Danielle Sarchet doubled. Althoff’s sacrifice fly got the Lady Shoes on the board. Then with two outs, Konkel ripped a triple bringing home Sarchet and Lexie Niebrugge followed with a base hit that brought in the tying run.

But in the top of the eighth, Kayla Schnippel delivered an RBI single to drive home what proved to be the winning run for Mt. Zion.

Courtney Gibson pitched all eight innings for T-Town and took the loss. She gave up nine hits and four runs, while walking three and striking out six.

The Lady Shoes are now 8-6 overall and 1-2 in league play. They will play at home Monday against Newton and then travel to Olney on Tuesday.
