The Effingham Lady Hearts won four singles and 1 doubles match Tuesday afternoon to post a close 5-4 tennis victory at Charleston.

No. 1 singles: Rachel Thomas (C) defeated Caroline Kull (E), 6-4, 6-4; No. 2 singles: Riley Arend (E) defeated Meleah Hackett (C), 6-4, 6-1; No. 3 singles: Lydia Kull (E) defeated Abigail Geisler (C), 4-6, 6-4, 10-7; No. 4 singles: Riley Seachrist (E) defeated Rainer Fullermore (C), 6-1, 6-2; No. 5 singles: Eden Wendling (E) defeated Maggie Goetten (C), 6-1, 6-2; No. 6 singles: Lexie Madlem (C) defeated Chloe Aden (E), 6-3, 6-4; No. 1 doubles: Thomas/Geisler (C) defeated Arend/Seachrist (E), 8-3; No. 2 doubles: C. Kull/L. Kull (E) defeated Hackett/Fullermore (C), 8-7; No. 3 doubles: Madlem/Goetten (C) defeated Gracie Kroenlein/Aila Woomer (E), 8-5.

The Lady Hearts will play at Teutopolis Thursday.

The Effingham girls tennis team went 1-2 over the weekend, but played very well in the Heather Bradshaw Invitational at Edwardsville High School.

The Lady Hearts dropped a 5-4 decision to Benton on Friday, then split their two matches Saturday. EHS beat Mascoutah 8-1 before falling to Principia 5-4. Effingham finished seventh overall.

“Our girls showed grit and heart in some very long competitive matches,” EHS coach Erik Williamson said. “The final place of seventh does not show how well they performed and matured from match to match.”

The Effingham girls tennis team made the drive up I-57 Tuesday to face Mattoon in a tennis match.

The host Lady Green Wave posted a 7-2 decision.

“The girls played some very competition tennis tonight,” said EHS coach Erik Williamson. “Our youth showed in some matches, but so did our grit. Riley Seachrist and Eden Wendelin both came back after being down a set to win in a tiebreaker. We are looking forward to improving and competing at all levels throughout the season.”

Effingham will play Friday and Saturday in the Edwardsville Invitational.
