Teutopolis basketball coach Chet Reeder summed up the game perfectly.
“It was a pretty start, but an ugly finish.”
The Wooden Shoes pitched a shutout for the first 10 minutes Friday night, building a 19-0 lead. But after that, it was a grind. With 40 fouls called and 45 free throws attempted, there was very little flow to the game.
But Bloomington Central Catholic never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way, and when the final horn sounded, Teutopolis owned a 54-41 victory, making Homecoming Night a success at J.H. Griffin Gymnasium.
It couldn’t have been a better start for the Shoes. Garrett Gaddis, Tyler Pruemer and Logan Lawson each knocked three-pointers, helping the hosts build a 15-0 lead after the opening eight minutes. Austin Bloemer and Mitch Koester added buckets, and two minutes into the second quarter, T-Town had that 19-point cushion.
“Those first 10 minutes were something,” Reeder said. “We set the tone rebounding-wise. They got no second chance points. I felt we could get them off the bounce offensively and we did that. Plus, our defense suffocated them. It frustrated them. I thought it set the tone for us.”
After missing their first 11 shots and committing six turnovers, the Saints got on the board when Colin Hayes hit a short jumper at the 5:29 mark. Gaddis followed with a three-pointer to make it a 20-point spread for THS, but by intermission, BCC was within 14 points, 26-12.
The Teutopolis Lady Shoes played strong down the stretch Thursday night and came away with a 59-50 victory at St. Joseph-Ogden.
T-Town held a slim 43-42 lead entering the final eight minutes. Chloe Probst hit 4-of-5 from the free throw line and scored eight points, while Anna Probst knocked down a three-pointer, helping the Lady Shoes outscore the Lady Spartans 16-8 to secure the big road win.
The game was close throughout, but Teutopolis led at every stop. They were up 14-11 after the opening eight minutes and 32-28 at intermission.
Three Lady Shoes finished in double figures, led by Chloe Probst’s 20 points. Mollie Ruholl scored 13 points and Anna Probst added 10. Malea Helmink had a team-high eight rebounds and Ruholl had three steals.
T-Town improved to 5-3 on the season. The Lady Shoes will return home Monday night for a Cross Creek Rivalry matchup with St. Anthony.
The Teutopolis Lady Shoes had four players in double figures, en route to a lopsided 58-24 victory Monday night at Pana.
Anna Probst, Malea Helmink and Mollie Ruholl combined to score 20 points in the first quarter, helping T-Town race to a 23-0 lead. It was 30-7 at halftime and 45-15 after three quarters.
Helmink led the Lady Shoes with 14 points, while Ruholl scored 13, Chloe Probst added 11 and Anna Probst chipped in 10. Chloe Probst led the team with five rebounds, while Ruholl came up with four steals.
T-Town improved to 4-3 on the season. The Lady Shoes will play Thursday night at St. Joe-Ogden.
Teutopolis pitched a first quarter shutout Tuesday night and then rolled to a 59-25 victory at Paris.
The Wooden Shoes built a 16-0 lead after the opening eight minutes and were never threatened. They led 34-9 at halftime and 52-17 heading into the fourth quarter.
Garrett Gaddis knocked down six three-pointers and scored 23 points to pace T-Town. He was the only player to reach double figures, but Gavin Addis scored nine, Logan Lawson added eight and Joey Niebrugge finished with seven.
The Shoes, now 4-2, will return home to face Bloomington Central Catholic on Friday night. It will be the Homecoming game at THS.

A 9-2 scoring spurt over a two-minute stretch in the fourth period was decisive.
But Teutopolis basketball coach Chet Reeder said his team’s struggles started long before that.
“Those started in the first half,” Reeder explained. “We didn’t take care of the basketball. We had 11 turnovers in the first half. You just can’t do that, especially against a good team.”
The Wooden Shoes turned the ball over 21 times in the game, including twice during that key fourth-quarter run. That proved to be too much to overcome, as the Tolono Unity Rockets took advantage of those miscues and used a red hot second half to come away with a 60-52 victory at J.H. Griffin Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
“That’s a team that thrives on chaos,” Reeder noted. “We knew they were going to press us and I thought we handled that pretty well. But we had too many careless turnovers. We gave them way too many extra possessions. We played the way they wanted us to play. You can’t do that and expect to beat a good team – and they have a quality basketball team.”
With 4:48 left in the game, the Rockets held a slim 43-41 lead. Back-to-back baskets by Mason O’Neill and Andrew Thomas increased the gap to six. After Garrett Gaddis hit a jumper for T-Town, Henry Thomas converted a turnover into a score and Dane Eisenmenger capped the 9-2 run with a three-pointer from the corner to give Unity the biggest lead of the game, 52-43, with 2:28 left.
“That two-minute stretch was pivotal,” Reeder said. “They took the shots we wanted them to take. But give them credit. They made them. They simply executed better than we did.”
