ET Sports Report

Taking care of the basketball is important in every game.

And when playing really good teams, even more so.

Even though the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes didn’t have a huge amount of turnovers – just 10 – THS Coach Chet Reeder said that was the difference in the game.

“They thrive in transition,” Reeder said. “When you give them steals, they turn those into points. They’re too good of a team to just give them points.”

The Warriors, ranked No. 2 in the Class A poll, did convert seven of those turnovers into points during the game and then went 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 19 seconds to secure a 59-52 victory Saturday evening at J.H. Griffin Gymnasium.

It put a bit of a damper on the night. Prior to the contest, the school and community had a special celebration in recognition of this being the 100th year of boys basketball in Teutopolis.

“You do hate to lose on a night like this, but my hat is off to Tuscola,” Reeder noted. “We were supposed to play Madison tonight, but they called and cancelled. This special night wouldn’t have happened without Tuscola stepping in and playing us.”

The game didn’t start well for the Shoes. Two of those turnovers were committed in the first three minutes and Kam Sweetnam converted both into three-pointers. Sawyer Woodard and Jordan Quinn added baskets and the Warriors opened up a quick 11-2 lead.

Mollie Ruholl came out red hot for the Teutopolis Lady Shoes.

She knocked down a pair of three-pointers and scored 12 points in the opening quarter Tuesday, helping the Lady Shoes seize control early, en route to a 61-35 victory over Belleville East in the Apex Network Physical Therapy Highland Girls Basketball Tournament.

T-Town was back in action today (Wednesday) at 6:30 p.m.

Behind Ruholl’s shooting, the Lady Shoes raced to a 22-7 lead over the Lady Lancers and were never threatened. Chloe Probst tallied 11 points in the second period, helping THS build its advantage to 47-21 at intermission.

Probst finished with a game-high 19 points, while Ruholl scored 14 and Kelsey Niemerg added 10.

The Lady Shoes are now 14-7 on the season.

Taylorville used scoring advantages in the first and third quarters Saturday to come away with a 56-43 victory over the Teutopolis Lady Shoes in an opening round game of the Apex Network Physical Therapy Highland Girls Basketball Tournament.

The Lady Tornadoes jumped out to a 17-7 lead after the opening eight minutes. Chloe Probst then scored eight points and Malea Helmink added six, helping T-Town go on a 24-15 run in the second quarter to narrow the gap to 32-31 at halftime.

But Taylorville responded with a 14-3 scoring surge in the third period to re-establish the double-digit lead, 46-34.

Helmink finished with 11 points to pace the Lady Shoes and Allie Ruholl added 10.

The Lady Shoes are now 13-7 on the season. They will return to tournament action in Highland Tuesday and will face either Breese Mater Dei or Belleville East at 4 p.m.
