ET Sports Report

It was a start Teutopolis basketball fans haven’t seen much of this season.

For whatever reason, this Wooden Shoes basketball team just seems to get off to a slow start in most games.

But not Tuesday night.

The Wooden Shoes scored the first 11 points of the game and were never headed.

It wasn’t always pretty – especially the fourth quarter – but it was enough, as Teutopolis posted a 55-45 win at home over a tough Casey-Westfield team.

“I’m really happy with them tonight,” THS coach Chet Reeder said. “We’ve been so inconsistent lately and haven’t started games very well. But we came out with energy and made some shots.”

Joey Niebrugge hit a short jumper just 19 seconds into the game to give the Shoes the lead for good. Tyler Pruemer, Garrett Gaddis and Alex Kremer added baskets and Gavin Addis capped the game-opening run with a three-pointer, making it 11-0 at the 3:29 mark.

A three from Mitch Koester made it 14-2 about a minute later before the Warriors rattled off eight straight points to close to within 14-10 after the first eight minutes.

The Teutopolis Lady Shoes will be looking to keep their string of regional titles going when the postseason opens the week of February 12.

The Lady Shoes – not counting the 2021 season when COVID prevented the postseason from being played – have won 13 consecutive regionals. And over the past 30 seasons, the Lady Shoes have brought home the regional plaque 30 times.

A year ago, the Lady Shoes won the Carmi Regional before being eliminated by Pana in a semifinal contest of the Pana Sectional.

This year, T-Town will enter as the No. 3 seed in the Lawrenceville Regional and play its first game on Monday, Feb. 12. They will play either Palestine-Hutsonville or Marshall at 7:30 p.m.

The regional championship is set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15.
