ET Sports Report

The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes had a game plan.

Keep St. Joseph-Ogden out of transition, limit their touches in the paint and be patient on offense.

“But in the first five minutes, it didn’t look like we had any game plan,” THS coach Chet Reeder said. “We didn’t do any of those things. But then we settled down and started to play much better.”

The Shoes grabbed the lead in the opening seconds of the second period and never trailed again, finishing with a 53-40 decision at home Thursday night over the Spartans.

In those first five minutes, the guests showed why Reeder didn’t want them to get out in transition. They repeatedly beat the Shoes down the floor. Luke Landrus and Logan Smith got a couple quick baskets and Landrus turned a T-Town turnover into a three-pointer.

At the 3:09 mark, St. Joe-Ogden held an 8-2 lead and it could have been a bigger margin had they made a couple more open shots near the basket.

After THS made just one of its first six shots, Zac Niebrugge broke a four-minute scoring drought by knocking down a shot from behind the arc. That actually ignited what turned into a 14-2 run that carried over into the second quarter.

The Shoes trailed 10-9 after the first eight minutes, but back-to-back scores by Joey Niebrugge and a three-pointer by Logan Lawson put THS on top to stay, 16-10.

Joey Niebrugge and Garrett Gaddis combined to score 32 points Saturday, leading the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes to a 52-37 win at Warrensburg-Latham.

The Shoes took a 12-8 lead after the opening period and built on it throughout. They were up 25-19 at halftime and 43-31 heading into the final eight minutes.

Niebrugge scored 17 points and Gaddis added 15 to lead all scorers in the game. Niebrugge had a strong all-around game. He finished with a double-double after pulling down 11 rebounds and also had five steals.

The Shoes improved to 11-5 on the season. They will return to action Tuesday with a home game against St. Joe-Ogden.
