For the second game in a row, the Teutopolis Lady Shoes had a lead going into the fourth quarter.

And for the second game in a row, one of the area’s best players led a comeback charge.

Tuesday night it was Danville’s Erin Houpt and Thursday night it was Charleston’s Shae Littleford.

Littleford scored 12 of her game-high 29 points in the final eight minutes, helping the Lady Trojans stay undefeated by posting a 54-50 victory at home over T-Town.

Littleford hit a pair of threes and scored eight points, as Charleston built a 16-9 lead after the first quarter. Kaitlyn Schumacher scored six points and Lexie Niebrugge added five, helping the Lady Shoes close to within 27-25 at halftime.

THS then went on a 12-6 scoring run in the third quarter to take a 37-33 advantage into the final period. Littleford then converted 8-of-11 from the free throw line and added two more baskets to help Charleston secure the win.

T-Town had three players in double figures. Schumacher led the way with 17 points, while Lexie Niebrugge and Kaylee Niebrugge both scored 13. Kaylee Niebrugge ended with a double-double, as she also pulled down 10 rebounds.

The Lady Shoes dipped to 10-5 overall and 8-4 in the Apollo Conference. They will play two more non-conference games this week – Friday at home against Warrensburg-Latham; and Saturday at St. Joe-Ogden.

Erin Houpt and Tharija Rosa combined to score 14 points in the fourth quarter Tuesday, helping Danville rally for a 60-56 victory at home over Teutopolis.

The Lady Shoes led throughout – 19-11 after the opening eight minutes; 38-27 at intermission; and 48-40 heading into the fourth quarter.

But the Lady Vikings then outscored T-Town 20-8 in the final period to pull out the win. Free throw shooting helped, as the hosts made 10-of-12 free throws in the final eight minutes.

Houpt was a handful the entire game. The senior standout finished with 36 points. She scored 23 of her team’s 27 points in the first half. Rosa had 10 of her 13 points in the second half.

Lexie Niebrugge and Kaylee Niebrugge both scored in double figures for Teutopolis, finishing with 17 and 13 points respectively. Izzy Hardiek led the Lady Shoes with eight rebounds and Kaylee Niebrugge pulled down six. T-Town shot 41 percent from the floor, connecting on 23-of-56 shots. They were 3-for-11 from three-point range and 7-for-8 from the foul line.

The Lady Shoes dipped to 10-4 overall. They will play three more games this week – Thursday at Charleston; Friday at home against Warrensburg-Latham; and Saturday at St. Joe-Ogden. THS is 8-3 in the Apollo Conference.

Welcome to the 1,000 Point Club.

The Teutopolis senior reached the coveted milestone Saturday afternoon and helped the Lady Shoes post a 59-46 victory in an Apollo Conference game at Taylorville.

Niebrugge entered the game with 996 career points, but reached 1,000 before the first quarter ended. She finished the game with 22 points, leading T-Town to the win.

THS led throughout. The Lady Shoes raced to a 13-3 lead after the opening eight minutes, and was on top 33-23 at halftime and 46-36 entering the fourth period.

Niebrugge had 13 of her points in the first half. Kaitlyn Schumacher and Izzy Hardiek also cracked double figures, scoring 12 and 10 points respectively. Hardiek and Schumacher led the team with eight rebounds apiece.

The Lady Shoes improved to 9-3 overall and 7-3 in the Apollo Conference. They will play four games this week – Monday at home against Effingham; Thursday at Charleston; Friday at home against Warrensburg-Latham; and Saturday at St. Joe-Ogden.

ET Sports Report

It was a typical rivalry game.

There was energy, hustle and intensity from the opening tip.

It was a close game that went down to the final shot.

It had just about everything a good high school basketball game can have.

Except for one thing.

A crowd.

Due to COVID restrictions, only 50 fans were allowed into J.H. Griffin Gymnasium Monday night, which was a shame. During a normal season, the game between the Teutopolis and Effingham girls would have drawn a large number of fans from both schools.

Those not allowed to attend this year missed a good one.

T-Town’s Lexie Niebrugge drilled a three-pointer to give the Lady Shoes the lead for good and then made a pair of pressure-packed free throws with just seven seconds to play.

But the outcome wasn’t decided until Taylor Armstrong’s game-tying three-point attempt at the buzzer was just a bit off-target, securing T-Town’s 38-35 victory.

“It really stinks that somebody had to lose this game,” EHS coach Jeff Schafer said. “Both teams played hard and played pretty well. It turned out to be a great defensive game. The only thing missing was the crowd.”

Evan Wermert had quite the offensive weekend.

After pumping in 30 points Friday night against Mattoon, the Teutopolis senior tallied 27 more Saturday, helping the Wooden Shoes post a 51-44 Apollo Conference victory at Taylorville.

Wermert scored nine points in the opening eight minutes, as the Shoes opened a 16-6 lead. He knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the second quarter, and Jordan Hardiek and Brendan Niebrugge also scored from long range, as THS took a 32-21 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

The Shoes were still up by double digits, 41-31, after three quarters and then received 10 more points from Wermert in the final period to secure the win.

He was the only T-Town player to reach double figures.

Teutopolis improved to 8-3 overall and 4-3 in the Apollo Conference. The Shoes will play four games this week, starting with a Tuesday match-up at home against Effingham, who will come in sitting atop the conference standings. THS will also play at home Thursday against St. Anthony; Friday at Charleston; and Saturday at St. Joe-Ogden.
