Chloe Probst scored what proved to be the winning basket with less than 20 seconds to play and the Teutopolis defense then got two stops to help the Lady Shoes post an impressive 37-33 victory on the road against previously undefeated Paris.
The host Lady Tigers, now 11-1 on the season, held a slim 33-32 lead when Chloe Probst drove to the basket and scored to put T-Town on top. Anna Probst hit a free throw and Kelsey Niemerg added another bucket in the waning seconds to secure the seventh straight win for the Teutopolis girls.
It was a close, back-and-forth game throughout. The Lady Shoes owned a 10-7 lead after the opening eight minutes, but Paris came back to take a slim 22-21 advantage into the locker room at halftime. The game was tied, 28-28, heading into the fourth quarter.
Chloe Probst led the Lady Shoes with 16 points and Niemerg added 10.
The Lady Shoes are now 8-3. They will next play on Thursday, Dec. 28, in the Coles County Girls Holiday Tournament. They will face Marion at 11:30 a.m. and Galesburg at 3 p.m. Both games will be at Mattoon High School.
The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes turned in a strong defensive effort, especially over the final three quarters Saturday, en route to an impressive 49-36 victory over Columbia.
It was part of the Greenville Shootout.
The Eagles scored 17 points in the opening eight minutes and held a 17-11 lead. But over the final 24 minutes, the T-Town defense only allowed 19 more points.
Meanwhile, the THS offense went to work and outscored Columbia 38-19 during that three-quarter stretch.
The Shoes led 24-22 at halftime and 37-31 after three quarters. T-Town then scored the first eight points of the fourth period to build a double-digit lead and maintained that the rest of the way.
Joey Niebrugge led the Teutopolis scoring attack with 12 points, while Garrett Gaddis had 11 and Tyler Pruemer, Austin Bloemer and Logan Lawson each added six.
The Shoes, winners of four straight, improved to 7-2. They will play Wednesday night at Mt. Vernon.

Chet Reeder had a lot to like about Tuesday night’s game.
The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes shot the ball extremely well on offense, forced Effingham into 19 turnovers on defense and played the game with pace.
And three lengthy scoring runs didn’t hurt either.
“We want pace,” Reeder emphasized. “We feel we can wear teams down. We might not wear them down in the first half, but by the third quarter it can make a difference. I thought we did a good job with that against Bloomington Central Catholic, but the two games before that we did not. Tonight, I thought we established the pace we wanted to play at.”
The Shoes opened a 14-point lead within the first 3½ minutes and never looked back, finishing with a 67-27 victory at Effingham.
Garrett Gaddis knocked down a pair of shots from long range, added an old-fashioned three-point play. Joey Niebrugge added a basket and Mitch Koester drilled another from behind the arc. At the 4:37 mark of the opening period, the Shoes were on top, 14-0.
“Our guys did a really good job executing,” Reeder noted. “We thought they would come out in a zone. I thought we were patient and didn’t take quick shots. One of our unsung heroes was Austin Bloemer. He didn’t do anything that will show up on the stat sheet, but did some things that really helped get others open. And then we knocked down our shots.”
“That early run set the tone for the game,” EHS coach Obie Farmer added. “We packed our zone inside. If we were going to get beat, they were going to have to beat us from the three-point line. They hit their shots early. And Gaddis really lit us up.”
The Teutopolis Lady Shoes stretched their winning streak to six Thursday night, posting a 48-42 victory at home over Newton.
The game was close throughout. It was tied 11-11 after the opening eight minutes. The Lady Shoes then took a 25-21 lead at intermission.
Chloe Probst knocked down three three-pointers in the third period, helping T-Town increase its advantage to 40-32. The Lady Shoes made just 2-of-6 free throws in the final quarter, but still secured the win.
Chloe Probst finished with four baskets from behind the arc and a game-high 16 points. Mollie Ruholl and Anna Probst both scored eight. Lilly Kessler had 15 points for the Lady Eagles, while Camryn Martin added 14.
The Lady Shoes are now 7-3. They will play Monday at Paris.

Turnovers and two long scoring runs proved to be the catalyst, as the Teutopolis Lady Shoes got their fifth win in a row, posting a 55-44 win at home Monday night over St. Anthony.
And it was a milestone win for THS coach Laurie Thompson, as she notched her 450th career victory.
“I don’t do any of this without the awesome players and assistant coaches I’ve had,” said Thompson, now in her 18th year as the head coach. “I got to start my coaching career with Dennis Koester, so I’m blessed to be here.”
It was a game of runs.
Chloe Probst scored nine points in the first seven minutes and the Lady Shoes raced to a 16-4 lead. But the Lady Bulldogs then rattled off 13 unanswered points. Addi Nuxoll scored six points during that run and St. Anthony took a 17-16 lead with 3:42 left in the first half.
“At the end of the first quarter, we really challenged our team,” said St. Anthony coach Aaron Rios. “I thought Addi, Stacie (Vonderheide) and Kallie (Kabbes) really responded. We had a very good second quarter. We went to our 1-3-1 zone. That helped us battle back.”
“They went to a 1-3-1 zone and we hadn’t seen that yet this year,” Thompson noted. “It gave us trouble at first. But then we made our adjustments, broke it down and started handling it much better. It also helped we started making some shots.”
