The Effingham frosh-soph volleyball team won two games to capture the championship Saturday of the St. Anthony Freshman-Sophomore Volleyball Tournament.
The Lady Hearts defeated Newton, 25-23, 25-21, in the semifinals and then beat Teutopolis in the finals. The scores were 25-18, 25-22.
The Lady Shoes reached the championship match by posting a 25-8, 25-12 win over Greenville.
The host Lady Bulldogs lost to Greenville in an opening-round match. The scores were 23-25, 23-25.
Effingham played host to Taylorville Thursday night and dropped an Apollo Conference volleyball match in two games.
The Lady Tornados prevailed 25-19, 25-17.
For EHS, Eliza Montgomery had 2 kills, 1 dig, 1 block; Hayley Dively 1 kill, 10 assists, 1 ace, 7 digs; Alexis Chrappa 4 kills, 9 digs, 1 block; Kennedy Sowell 2 kills; Sam Urch 5 kills, 2 blocks; Jacy Boatman 3 kills, 1 ace, 4 digs; Callie Feldhake 3 digs; Olivia Martin 11 digs; and Tori Budde 1 assist.
Taylorville also won the junior varsity match – 25-21, 25-11; but the Effingham freshmen prevailed in three games –21-14, 13-21, 15-13.
The Lady Hearts will return to action Thursday at home against Lincoln.
The Effingham freshmen went 2-0 Saturday to capture first place in the Olney Volleyball Tournament.

The Lady Hearts will return to action Tuesday at Mt. Zion.
Effingham traveled to Mt. Zion and dropped an Apollo Conference volleyball match Tuesday night.
The host Lady Braves won in two games. The scores were 25-19, 25-20.
“Mt. Zion hit really well on the outside tonight,” said EHS coach Laurie Bohnhoff. “They played better than last time and we struggled to get hits down on them. They swing very aggressive.”

Mt. Zion also won the junior varsity and freshmen contests. The scores in the JV match were 25-19, 25-16; and 21-17, 21-14 in the freshman match.
Effingham will play at home Thursday against Taylorville.
Effingham recorded 27 kills in just two games Tuesday night, en route to a two-game volleyball win at home over Mahomet-Seymour.
The scores were 25-12, 25-17. Seven different players recorded kills in the match, as the Lady Hearts improved to 10-7 on the season.
