The Effingham Lady Hearts went 3-1 and finished in third place Saturday at the Charleston Invitational.

Effingham defeated Decatur MacArthur 25-23, 25-18, and Carbondale 25-22, 25-15 to reach the semifinal rounds. The Lady Hearts then dropped a 19-25, 16-25 match to Highland, but bounced back to beat Teutopolis in the third place contest. The scores were 26-24, 25-16.

Effingham’s Sam Urch and Jacy Boatman were selected to the all-tournament team.

“We played pretty well,” said EHS coach Laurie Bohnhoff. “Jacy dominated the first two matches and Sam blocked well and had a high hitting percentage. Defensively, we played hard and didn’t give up on anything. Olivia and Lexi both had good days in the back row.”

For the Lady Hearts, Eliza Montgomery had 3 kills, 1 assist, 1 dig and 5 blocks; Brueklyn Belcher 1 dig; Taylor O’Dell 3 assists, 2 digs; Hayley Dively 2 kills, 64 assists, 7 aces, 9 digs, 1 block; Alexis Chrappa 22 kills, 1 ace, 30 digs, 1 block; Kennedy Sowell 10 kills, 2 digs, 4 blocks; Sam Urch 17 kills, 2 assists, 6 aces, 8 digs, 8 blocks; Jacy Boatman 25 kills, 1 assist, 11 aces, 32 digs, 1 block; Morgan Hagler 4 aces, 7 digs; Olivia Martin 2 kills, 5 assists and 31 digs.

Effingham, now 9-7 on the season, will play at home Tuesday against Mahomet-Seymour.

Effingham paid a visit to Charleston Thursday night and dropped an Apollo Conference volleyball match.

The Lady Trojans prevailed in two games by scores of 25-19, 25-19.

For the Lady Hearts, Eliza Montgomery had 2 blocks; Taylor O’Dell 5 assists, 1 dig; Hayley Dively 1 kill, 12 assists, 4 digs; Alexis Chrappa 3 kills, 4 aces, 6 digs; Kennedy Sowell 2 kills, 2 digs, 3 blocks; Sam Urch 3 kills, 1 block; Jacy Boatman 10 kills, 8 digs; Callie Feldhake 1 assist, 1 ace, 4 digs, 1 block; and Olivia Martin 7 digs.

Charleston also won the junior varsity match. The scores were 24-26, 13-25, 13-15. The lady Hearts took the freshman contest in two games. The scores were 21-14, 21-14.

Effingham will play Saturday in the Charleston Tournament.

Teutopolis finished second and Effingham fifth in the Bronze Flight at the 28th annual Crossroads Classic Volleyball Tournament.

The annual event drew 24 talented volleyball squads from four states. Matches were played Friday at Effingham and St. Anthony High School and Saturday at EHS and Effingham Junior High.

Plainfield North rolled through the competition, finishing 5-0 and winning the Gold Flight of the Crossroads Classic for the first time with a 25-23, 25-22 decision over Belleville Althoff, which was seeking a fifth title.

Wheaton St. Francis, a six-time winner, won the Silver Flight with a win over Bowling Green Greenwood.

Both the Lady Shoes and Lady Hearts dropped two matches Friday to qualify for the Bronze Flight on Saturday.

Effingham made the long trip to Lincoln Tuesday night and dropped a three-game volleyball match to the host Lady Railers.

Effingham dropped the first game 25-21, bounced back to win 25-15, but was defeated in a close third game, 25-23.

For the Lady Hearts, Hayley Dively had 1 kill, 23 assists, 2 aces, 7 digs, 1 block; Alexis Chrappa 6 kills, 2 assists, 3 aces, 17 digs, 1 block; Kennedy Sowell 6 kills, 1 assist, 2 digs, 1 block; Sam Urch 8 kills, 1 ace, 2 digs, 3 blocks; Jacy Boatman 7 kills, 1 assist, 11 digs; Callie Feldhake 1 kill, 1 ace, 1 block; Morgan Hagler 3 digs; and Olivia Martin 1 ace, 6 digs.

Effingham won the junior varsity match. The scores were 25-23, 15-25, 15-10.

The Lady Hearts will travel to Charleston Thursday night.

Effingham traveled to Taylorville Tuesday night and dropped its first volleyball match of the season.

Taylorville won in two games. The scores were 25-16, 26-24.

“They had some nice quick hits through the middle that we struggled to stop,” said EHS coach Laurie Bohnhoff. “Our hitting percentage was pretty low. We showed some fight in the second game, even though we were not really playing well offensively. We need to get back on track for this weekend.”

For Effingham, Taylor O’Dell had 4 assists, 2 digs; Hayley Diveley 10 assists, 4 digs, 1 block; Alexis Chrappa 7 kills, 8 digs; Kennedy Sowell 1 kill, 1 block; Sam Urch 2 kills, 1 assist, 1 ace, 1 dig, 1 block; Jacy Boatman 6 kills, 1 ace, 6 digs; Callie Feldhake 4 digs, 1 block; Morgan Hagler 1 assist, 3 digs; and Olivia Martin 8 digs.

Taylorville also won the junior varsity and freshman matches. The scores in the JV match were 25-15, 25-16; and 21-14, 21-17 in the freshman contest.

The Lady Hearts, now 3-1 on the season, will play in the Crossroads Classic Friday and Saturday.
