It was quite a night for Max Niebrugge.
First, he was crowned Homecoming King.
Then he led the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes to a 57-51 victory Friday night over Bloomington Central Catholic.
With leading scorer Brendan Niebrugge on the sideline with an ankle injury, several T-Town players stepped up and played roles in the win. But Max Niebrugge was the catalyst.
The senior point guard pumped in a season-high 19 points and made four crucial free throws in the final 2½ minutes to secure the Shoes sixth win of the season.
“I don’t think Max left the floor the entire game,” THS coach Chet Reeder said. “He played great defense, hit big free throws and played under control the whole game. He was the king tonight.”
The Shoes never trailed, threatened to pull away a couple times and then had to hang on.
Caleb Siemer scored eight points in the opening period, helping Teutopolis open a 17-9 lead. As the game would do throughout, it then began to see-saw back and forth. The Shoes led by seven points three times in the second period and nine on one occasion, but the Saints were within five, 31-26, at intermission.
The Teutopolis Lady Shoes used a big second quarter to build a comfortable lead and went on to post a 48-35 victory Thursday night at St. Joe-Ogden.
T-Town led 14-9 after the opening eight minutes and then went on a 16-4 scoring run in the second period to build a 30-13 halftime lead.
The Lady Spartans outscored THS 22-18 in the second half, but the Lady Shoes still came home with a double-digit victory.
Teutopolis had three players in double figures. Kaitlyn Schumacher led the way with 12 points, while Kaylee Niebrugge scored 11 and Emily Konkel added 10. Konkel and Niebrugge also had eight rebounds apiece.
The Lady Shoes improved to 5-2. They will return home Monday to play St. Anthony.
In a game that was close the whole way, the Pana Lady Panthers pulled out a 39-38 overtime victory at home over Teutopolis Monday night.
The Lady Shoes jumped out to a 9-2 lead after the first period, but Pana rallied to tie the score at 16-16 at halftime. The game was tied 28-28 after three quarters and knotted at 33-33 at the end of regulation. The Lady Panthers outscored T-Town 6-5 in the overtime period.
It was a cold shooting night for the Lady Shoes. They made just 14-of-48 attempts, an icy 29 percent. They were 3-for-12 from three-point range, a 25 percent clip.
Kaitlyn Schumacher had a double-double performance for THS, finishing with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Zoe Cremens and Emily Konkel both scored eight and Izzy Hardiek pulled down 10 rebounds.
The Lady Shoes dipped to 4-2 on the season. They will return to action Thursday at St. Joe-Ogden.
It didn’t come easy, but the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes posted another win Tuesday night.
They traveled to Paris, fell behind early, but came back to get a 50-45 victory over the Tigers.
Conor Breneman scored 10 of his game-high 18 points and helped Paris jump out to an 18-9 lead after the opening eight minutes.
But the Shoes started surging back in the second period. Dylan Pruemer knocked down a pair of three-pointers, T-Town went on a 12-6 run and closed to within 24-21 at halftime.
THS used the free throw line to grab the lead in the third period. The Shoes made 7-of-9 foul shots, got a three-point play from Pruemer and led 36-33 entering the final quarter. T-Town then went 6-of-8 from the charity stripe down the stretch to maintain its lead and secure the win.
Max Niebrugge and Pruemer shared scoring honors with 11 points each, and Caleb Siemer added 10.
The Shoes, now 5-1 on the season, will return home Friday to face Bloomington Central Catholic on Homecoming Night.

A quality win against a quality team.
That’s how Teutopolis coach Chet Reeder summed up Saturday’s 59-51 victory at home over Tolono Unity.
After opening the season by winning three of four games and finishing second at the St. Anthony Thanksgiving Tournament, the Shoes had a week off before returning to the court Saturday afternoon.
A three-point play by Caleb Siemer and a bucket by Brendan Niebrugge from behind the arc capped a 10-0 run, erased an early four-point deficit and gave the Shoes a lead they never relinquished.
Siemer netted nine points in the opening eight minutes, helping T-Town to a 14-7 edge. When Brendan Niebrugge connected from long range again, THS had its first double-digit lead, 23-12, midway through the second period. The Rockets got within nine, but a free throw from Kayden Althoff and another three from Brendan Niebrugge sent the Shoes to the locker room with a 33-19 advantage at intermission.
“Overall, I was happy with how we came out and played,” Reeder said. “We executed the things we’ve been working on in practice. Plus, it was just good to be playing again and especially nice to be on our home floor with fans here.”
Teutopolis maintained a double-digit lead throughout much of the second half and built the margin to 19 points, 45-26, after Brendan Niebrugge knocked down his fifth three-pointer of the game at the 3:19 mark of the third period.
But every time the Shoes threatened to really pull away, the Rockets would trim the gap to 11 or 13 points to stay within striking distance.
They were within 11 late in the third quarter, but Max Niebrugge made one free throw and Kayden Althoff made a pair from the foul stripe to give the Shoes a 48-34 edge heading into the final eight minutes.
A bucket by Max Niebrugge to open the fourth period made it a 16-point bulge. It was still a 16-point margin when Kayden Althoff connected from behind the arc with 2:59 left in the game. That gave THS a seemingly comfortable 57-41 advantage.
