The St. Anthony boys golf team competed Saturday in the Marquette Catholic Schools Invitational and placed fifth in a very talented eight-team field.
Quincy Notre Dame was the team champion with a 309 total. The Bulldogs had 340 total strokes in the event played at Spencer T. Olin Golf Club.
“There was excellent competition at this event,” said St. Anthony coach Phil Zaccari. “Spencer T. Olin is a course you need to play a couple times and we were not familiar with the layout. We struggled a little not knowing where to play our next shot, but we grinded and competed pretty well.”
Ryan Schultz led the Bulldogs with an 18-hole score of 82. Jonathan Willenborg finished with an 85, Michael Martelli 86 and Thomas Chojnicki 87 to complete the team scoring. Luke Flaig (88) and Jayden Rios (90) also played.
“Every player had one or two bad holes that elevated our scores,” Zaccari noted. “We learned a lot about where we are and what we need to do the remainder of the year.”
St. Anthony will play Tuesday at Shelbyville.
The St. Anthony Junior High School boys golf team will be well represented at the IESA State Golf Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 14, in Peoria.
The Bullpups had four golfers finish in the top seven and each one qualified for the state tournament, which will be played Friday and Saturday at the Kellogg Golf Course in Peoria. It is located at 7716 N. Radnor Road.
Coen Pennington led St. Anthony with an 18-hole score of 82. He finished third overall in the sectional, which was played at the Eagle Ridge Golf Course in Paris. Lane Ludwig finished with an 85 and tied for fourth; Joey Trupiano 85 and in sixth; and Ryan Schmidt 86 and tied for seventh.
Jude Traub also shot 86 and tied for seventh and will advance to the state tournament, as well.
Other participants from SAJHS were Charlie Wegman, 89, and Dakota Flaig, 93.
Competing for Sacred Heart were Brody Boehm, 91; Henry Brent, 98; Alec Hakman, 112; Jack Swingler, 119; and Ethan Karolewicz, 120.
The boys state tournament is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
The St. Anthony girls golf team traveled to Salem Tuesday and posted a victory.
The Lady Bulldogs easily won by a score of 163 to 228.
Ellie Wegman was the medalist, turning in a nine-hole score of 39. Also scoring for St. Anthony was Macy Ludwig with a 40, Lauren Schwing 42 and Nina Hakman 42. Also competing was Morgan Schuette (44), Cara Hakman 44, Maddy Brummer 46, Jessica Coffin (46) and Reagan Westendorf (50).
The match was played at Salem Country Club.
Ryan Schultz shot an impressive 36 Tuesday, helping the St. Anthony boys post a 162-190 golf victory at Salem.
The Bulldogs dominated the match, which was played at Salem Country Club. They had the six lowest rounds in the match and only four counted toward their team score.
In addition to Schultz, Thomas Chojnicki finished with a 41, Luke Flaig 42, Jonathan Willenborg and Jayden Rios 43 and Darin Hutchison 44. Also competing was Michael Martelli (46) and Aidan Tegeler (46).
The Bulldogs will compete in the Challenge at the Den on Thursday.
The St. Anthony boys and girls golf teams competed in a triangular match Wednesday at Oblong.
In the boys match, the Bulldogs only had two competitors so didn’t record a team score. Oblong was the winning team with a 175 total, while Robinson finished at 186.
For St. Anthony, Darin Hutchison shot a 46 and Aiden Tegeler finished with a 52.
In the girls match, the Lady Bulldogs were the only team with enough players to have a team score. They had a 171 total.
St. Anthony’s Ellie Wegman was the medalist with a 42. Nina Hakman, Lauren Schwing and Maddy Brummer all shot 43 to complete the team score. Also competing was Jessica Coffin and Cara Hakman, who both shot 47.
Both the St. Anthony boys and girls team will return to action Tuesday with a match at Salem.
