St. Anthony had four golfers shoot sub-40 rounds Thursday and rolled to a triangular match win at Oak Terrace Golf Course in Pana.
The Bulldogs finished with 151 total strokes, which was 49 shots better than runner-up Taylorville’s 200. Pana finished with 220.
Luke Flaig had a superb round, finishing with a 35. Thomas Chojnicki shot 38 and both Jayden Rios and Michael Martelli fired 39s to complete the Bulldogs scoring. Also playing for SAHS was Ryan Schultz (41), Darin Hutchison (43), Jonathan Willenborg (45) and Aidan Tegeler (47).
St. Anthony will play Saturday in the Windsor/Stew-Stras Invitational.
In a quadrangular golf match at Pana Thursday, St. Anthony came out a winner with a 177 team score.
Lincolnwood finished second with 223, followed by Pana 234 and Taylorville 263.
Morgan Schuette was medalist with a 41. Also scoring for St. Anthony was Nina Hakman 45, Maddy Brummer 45 and Reagan Westendorf 46. Cara Hakman also participated and shot a 46.
The Lady Bulldogs will play Saturday in the Salem Invitational.
Jonathan Willenborg shot a 38 Monday afternoon, helping St. Anthony post a 163-204 victory over Flora in boys golf.
Ryan Schultz finished with a 41 and Luke Flaig and Thomas Chojnicki both shot 42 at Effingham Country Club. Also playing for the Bulldogs was Darin Hutchison (44), Jayden Rios (44), Michael Martelli (58) and Aidan Tegeler (58).
St. Anthony will travel to Pana on Thursday.
Macy Ludwig and Lauren Schwing both shot a 40 Tuesday, helping the St. Anthony girls golf team post a win over St. Thomas More in a match played at Lincolnshire Country Club in Champaign.
The Lady Bulldogs finished with 168 total strokes and won the match by three shots.
Ellie Wegman finished with 43 and Nina Hakman 45 to complete the team scoring. Also competing was Cara Hakman (46), Morgan Schuette (47) and Reagan Westendorf (50).
The St. Anthony, Effingham and Teutopolis boys golf teams all competed in the Mattoon Invitational over the weekend.
The 38-team event was played Friday and Saturday at Meadowview Golf Course and Mattoon Country Club.
The Bulldogs finished 10th overall with a final total of 652. Hillsboro was the tournament winner, finishing with 612 total strokes. Effingham was 27th with 717 and T-Town was 37th at 853.
For St. Anthony, Jayden Rios had rounds of 76-82 for 158. Michael Martelli shot 85-78-163, Luke Flaig 81-83-164 and Ryan Schultz 83-84-167 to complete the team score. Thomas Chojnicki (86-85-171) and Jonathan Willenborg (92-86-178) also participated.
“This is a good tournament for us,” said St. Anthony coach Phil Zaccari. “Being one of the smallest schools here and finishing in the top 10 is a good measuring stick for this team. The courses were set up to challenge the golfers. They were a good test of patience. We grinded pretty well and guys stepped up.”
Tate Niebrugge had Effingham’s top round, shooting 86-81-167. Also for the Hearts, Aiden Beck shot 98-76-174, Austin Waldoff 99-88-187 and Ben Donsbach 104-85-189 to complete the team score. Also competing was Nick Burgess (105-105-210) and Ryker Schneider (112-105-217).
“Saturday was our best score of the year by 18 shots,” EHS coach Jeff Schafer said. “And of Friday, Aiden Beck shot a 76, which was his career low. So we played pretty well.”
Drew Kerner had the low round both days for Teutopolis. He shot 99-92-191. Also scoring for the Shoes were Zach Ruholl 112-101-213, Andy Niebrugge 116-102-218 and Gabe Schlink 116-116-232. Also playing for THS was Gavin Meger (115-118-233).
St. Anthony and Teutopolis will play today (Monday) at home. The Bulldogs will host Flora and T-Town will fce Windsor/Stew-Stras.
Effingham will travel to Taylorville on Tuesday.
