The St. Anthony Bulldogs clinched at least a share of the National Trail Conference title Friday night with a convincing 68-35 victory at Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City.
The Bulldogs remained undefeated in seven conference games and set up a chance to clinch the title outright next Wednesday when they travel to Louisville to face North Clay.
It was over early Friday night. Craig Croy scored eight points, helping the Bulldogs build a 21-10 lead after the opening eight minutes. Seth Hotze netted six points, while Logan Antrim and Croy added four more in the second quarter. When the teams headed to the locker room, St. Anthony was in control, 40-19.
The Bulldogs didn’t let up in the third period. Croy knocked down a pair of three-pointers and scored eight points. Heading into the final quarter, SAHS had a commanding 36-point cushion, 65-29.
Croy finished the game with 20 points, while Hotze added 12.
St. Anthony improved to 9-3 overall and 7-0 in the National Trail Conference. The Bulldogs will return home Monday night for a non-conference game against Macon Meridian and then travel to Louisville Wednesday night to face North Clay.
Neoga grabbed an early lead and never trailed, en route to a 46-28 victory at home Thursday night over the St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs.
The Lady Indians led 11-4 after the opening eight minutes and 20-14 at intermission. Neoga then outscored St. Anthony 26-14 in the second half to pull away for the win.
Riley Guy led SAHS with seven points and Lucy Fearday added five.
The Lady Bulldogs dropped to 4-7 overall and 4-3 in the National Trail Conference. They will play Saturday at St. Elmo/Brownstown.
Riley Guy and Lucy Fearday combined to score 51 points Monday night, leading the St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs to a 69-57 victory at home over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City.
Guy poured in 30 points and Fearday added 21 more, as the Lady Bulldogs improved to 4-6 overall and 4-2 in the National Trail Conference.
Guy and Fearday both scored nine points in the opening eight minutes, helping SAHS take an 18-16 lead. Guy tallied 11 more in the second period and the Lady Bulldogs took a 35-27 to the locker room at halftime.
St. Anthony then outscored CHBC 19-13 in the third period to expand its advantage to 54-40. Fearday scored 12 points and Guy added 10 in the second half.
The Lady Bulldogs will play two more NTC contests this week – Thursday at Neoga and Saturday at St. Elmo/Brownstown.
It took eight minutes, but the St. Anthony Bulldogs finally relaxed.
And then they took off.
St. Anthony outscored Altamont 37-13 during the middle two quarters Tuesday night to turn a six-point deficit into a comfortable lead, en route to a convincing 61-36 victory in a clash between the two undefeated teams in the National Trail Conference.
“Offensively, we were really tight,” St. Anthony Coach Cody Rincker said. “We missed some bunnies early. But then we relaxed, took what their defense was giving us and started making shots.”
Grant Nuxoll hit a three-pointer and scored seven points, Craig Croy knocked down five free throws and Logan Antrim, who was back after missing two games due to an ankle injury, connected from long range to spark a 19-9 run in the second quarter.
Croy then made a pair of three-pointers and scored seven points and both Antrim and Seth Hotze scored four, helping the Bulldogs outscored the Indians 18-4 in the third period and expand their lead to 42-24 heading into the final eight minutes.
“We focused on defense and energy,” Rincker said. “In the first game with Altamont (a 41-38 loss in a non-conference game), they beat us in hustle plays and rebounding. We knew we needed to improve in those two areas to be successful tonight.”
It was a low-scoring affair Saturday, but the St. Anthony Bulldogs came out on top, posting a 35-23 non-conference victory at Flora.
The Bulldogs built an 11-7 lead after the opening period and increased that to 24-15 at intermission. Entering the final eight minutes, St. Anthony had a double-digit advantage, 33-21. Both teams scored only two points in the final eight minutes.
Craig Croy was the only double figure scorer in the game, finishing with 10 points. Seth Hotze scored eight and both Ty Wiedman and Grant Nuxoll added six.
St. Anthony improved to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in the NTC. The Bulldogs will play three games this week, starting with a big National Trail Conference match-up Tuesday night at home against Altamont. Both teams are 4-0 in league play.
