An explosive second quarter was the difference Tuesday night.

The St. Anthony Bulldogs, held to just 18 points the other three quarters, lit up the scoreboard in the second period. They poured in 26 points, turning a two-point deficit into an 18-point halftime lead, en route to a 44-38 victory at South Central.

Kennan Walsh scored eight points and Logan Antrim added seven in that decisive eight-minute stretch. Ty Wiedman knocked down a pair of three-pointers and Craig Croy added five points, as the Bulldogs built a 33-15 cushion at intermission.

St. Anthony needed that advantage. The Bulldogs scored just two points in the third quarter and only 11 in the second half, but hung on to remain undefeated in the National Trail Conference.

Antrim, Walsh and Croy each scored 10 points to pace the St. Anthony scoring attack. The Bulldogs connected on 50 percent of their shots, making 17-of-34 attempts. They were 6-of-17 from long range and 3-for-6 from the foul line. They also held a 26-13 rebounding edge, but did turn the ball over 24 times.

St. Anthony improved to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the NTC. The Bulldogs will be back in action tonight (Wednesday), traveling to Dieterich. They will then play at home Friday against Windsor/Stew-Stras and Saturday at Flora.

Windsor/Stew-Stras raced to a quick lead Monday night and went on to post a 58-36 victory at home over the St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs.

Mikaka Nichols and Hannah Hayes combined for 18 points in the opening eight minutes, helping the Lady Hatchets open a 20-7 lead. The margin expanded to 33-16 at halftime and 50-25 after three periods.

Nichols ended with 20 points, while Hayes scored 13 and Ella Kinkelaar added 12.

Riley Guy and Lucy Fearday both scored nine points for St. Anthony and Reese Jones had seven.

The Lady Bulldogs dipped to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the National Trail Conference. They will play three more games this week – Wednesday at St. Elmo/Brownstown; Thursday at Altamont; and Saturday at home against Sullivan.

For three quarters, the St. Anthony Bulldogs just couldn’t produce a consistent scoring attack.

But the fourth quarter was a totally different story.

The Bulldogs suddenly went red hot and scored nearly as many points in the final eight minutes (27) as they did in the first 24 (30).

The end result was a 57-36 win at home Saturday afternoon over Newton.

“We found something that fourth quarter,” SAHS coach Cody Rincker said. “It proves how we have to attack the offensive glass. We shot pretty well in our first game, but not so well the last two. Attacking the offensive glass has to be part of our offense.”

Entering the final eight minutes, the Bulldogs owned a 30-25 advantage. But that ballooned to double-digits in 90 seconds. Grant Nuxoll opened the quarter by grabbing an offensive rebound and scoring, followed by back-to-back buckets by Seth Hotze to make it 36-25.

On three different occasions, the Eagles trimmed the lead to nine points, but an 8-0 run in the middle of the quarter put the Bulldogs in total control. And six of those points came in a seven second span. Logan Antrim scored at the 3:09 mark and got fouled. He missed the free throw, but Nuxoll grabbed the rebounded, scored and was fouled two seconds later. Nuxoll then missed his free throw, but Antrim grabbed another board and scored again just three seconds later to expand the lead to 17 points, 49-32, with 3:02 left to play.

St. Anthony made 10-of-14 shots in the period and added 7-of-11 foul shots and out-rebound Newton 10-1. The dominant 27-11 scoring surge wrapped up the 21-point victory.

The St. Anthony Bulldogs used a big scoring run in the second quarter Friday night to pull away, en route to a 62-30 victory at home over St. Elmo-Brownstown.

The Bulldogs built an early 19-7 lead, but the Eagles battled back to get within 25-18 midway through the second period.

But that’s when St. Anthony caught fire, scoring 17 unanswered points to take a commanding 42-18 lead at halftime. It was 52-25 after three periods.

The Bulldogs shot well from the field, connecting on 25-of-46 attempts, a 54 percent clip. Inside the arc, they were 24-for-34, a torrid 71 percent. They also out-rebounded SEB 31-17.

St. Anthony had three players in double figures. Seth Hotze led the way with 13 points, while Grant Nuxoll scored 12 and Craig Croy added 11.

St. Anthony improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the National Trail Conference. They will be back in action today (Saturday), facing cross-town rival and undefeated Effingham. The varsity game will begin at approximately 6 p.m.

The St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs passed the ball well and showed patience on offense.

They also limited their turnovers, won the rebounding battle and made six straight free throws in the final two minutes.

The combination of those things resulted in a 48-35 victory at home Thursday night over Dieterich.

“We’ve gotten a lot better since our first game,” said SAHS coach Aaron Rios. “This is the best we’ve passed the ball all season and our patience got us some good shots. Plus, we played hard on defense and rebounded well. Overall, I thought we played a pretty good game.”

St. Anthony never trailed. Riley Guy hit a couple jumpers, Grace Karolewicz made three free throws and Reese Jones added a bucket, as the Lady Bulldogs scored the first nine points of the game. It was a 9-3 lead after the opening eight minutes.

Guy knocked down a 3-pointer early in the second quarter and the hosts built a double-digit advantage, 16-3. Guy added another from long range later and the Lady Bulldogs took a 23-11 lead into the locker room at halftime.
