The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes are now just two wins away from that coveted 2,000-win plateau.
They notched the boys basketball program’s 1,998th victory Tuesday night with a 46-39 decision at home over Newton.
But it didn’t come easy.
The Eagles held a 19-17 lead at halftime. The Shoes regained the lead by outscoring Newton 11-7 in the third quarter and then secured the victory down the stretch.
Gavin Addis led all scorers with 16 points. Drew Hoene was also in double figures, finishing with 10.
The Shoes are now 16-8 for the season. They will return to action Friday night at home against St. Anthony. The Bulldogs are currently ranked No. 2 in Class 1A and will enter the game with a 22-2 record and riding a 20-game winning streak.
The Teutopolis Lady Shoes are probably glad there are no more games with teams from Breese on their regular schedule.
Saturday, the T-Town girls dropped a game at Breese Central, the No. 1-ranked team in Class 2A.
And Tuesday night, it was Breese Mater Dei that traveled to J.H. Griffin Gymnasium and posted a 54-38 win over the host Lady Shoes.
Mater Dei led throughout.
Mariah Bonhoff scored seven points and Alyssa Koerkenmeier added six, as the Lady Knights built a 23-14 advantage after the opening eight minutes. It was a 10-point spread, 31-21, at halftime, and heading into the fourth period, Mater Dei owned an 18-point lead, 45-27.
Koerkenmeier scored 16 points and Bonhoff added 15 for the Lady Knights, who improved to 19-9.
Kelsey Niemerg led Teutopolis with 10 points, while Anna Probst scored eight.
The Lady Shoes are now 19-8. They will return to action Thursday with a game at Altamont.

It was a tale of two halves.
The first half went much like everyone expected. The score was tied five times and the lead changed hands on five occasions. In other words, it was a close game.
The second half, however, was a completely different story.
The Teutopolis Lady Shoes went on a massive scoring run, widening the gap to more than 20 points, en route to a 54-36 Senior Night victory Friday over the Effingham Lady Hearts.
“At halftime, I told the girls I was pleased with how they were playing defensively,” said THS coach Laurie Thompson. “Offensively, they were doing some good things and making good decisions. They just weren’t finishing.
“We had a good crowd and the girls put on a show for them, especially in the second half,” Thompson added. “They kept doing good things, but they started making shots.”
Chloe Probst made the first one – a three-pointer – just 48 seconds into the third period. Effingham’s Bella Austin made a couple free throws less than a minute later. But the rest of the quarter belonged to T-Town.
For one quarter, the Teutopolis Lady Shoes were in the game.
Then Breese Central proved it’s the state’s No. 1 ranked team in Class 2A.
The Lady Cougars outscored T-Town 38-11 in the middle two quarters Saturday, en route to a 57-30 victory on their home floor.
Chloe Probst and Kelsey Niemerg both scored five points in the opening eight minutes, helping the Lady Shoes take a 12-10 lead.
But Breese Central began to take control after that. The Lady Cougars went on a 22-7 run in the second period and followed that up with a 16-4 scoring edge in the third quarter. Heading into the final eight minutes, the hosts held a commanding 48-23 advantage.
Taylor Trame scored 15 points and Lily Butler added 10 for the Lady Cougars, who notched their third straight win, 11th in 12 games, and improved to 23-2 overall.
Niemerg paced T-Town with nine points, while Chloe Probst and Mollie Ruholl both scored eight.
The Lady Shoes are now 19-7. They will return home Monday and welcome Breese Mater Dei. The “other” Breese team is pretty good, too. The Lady Knights are 18-9, but have dropped their last three games.
The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes dropped a close game Friday night, falling 44-42 at Breese Mater Dei.
As expected, the game was close throughout. It was tied, 11-11, after the first eight minutes and the Shoes held a 22-19 lead at intermission.
The host Knights came back to take a one-point lead, 31-30, into the fourth quarter.
Luke Brefeld and Gavin Peppenhorst led Mater Dei in scoring with 14 and 12 points respectively. The Knights improved to 17-8.
Alex Kremer paced T-Town with 14 points, while Mick Niebrugge also scored in double figures, finishing with 12.
The Shoes are now 15-8 for the season. They will return to action Tuesday, playing at home against Newton.
