Good teams manage to win even when they don’t play their best.
Such was the case Tuesday night.
The St. Anthony Bulldogs, fresh off victories over rivals Effingham and Teutopolis, en route to the Thanksgiving tourney championship, didn’t look like a tournament winner.
They turned the ball over 17 times, made just 1-of-14 shots from three-point range and, overall, simply didn’t play well.
But they played well enough.
St. Anthony used an 11-2 third quarter run to build a double-digit lead and maintained it throughout the second half, posting a 58-44 win at home over North Clay.
North Clay scored just two points in the overtime period, but it was enough to post a 35-33 freshman boys basketball win Tuesday night at St. Anthony.
The Bulldogs held a 24-19 lead after three quarters, but the Cardinals rallied to tie it at 33-33 at the end of regulation.
Kyle Stewart scored seven points for St. Anthony, while Max Sager and Griffin Sehy both had five.
The St. Anthony Bulldogs placed three players in double figures in both the freshman and sophomore games Monday night and came away with a pair of home victories over Marshall.
Max Sager, Will Hoene and Eli Levitt combined to score 39 points, leading the SAHS freshmen to a 62-40 victory.
The Bulldogs built a 12-7 lead after one period and built on it the rest of the way. They were on top 27-17 at halftime and 50-30 after three quarters.
Sager led the way with 15 points, while Hoene scored 14 and Levitt added 10.
In the sophomore contest, St. Anthony outscored Marshall 28-14 in the middle two quarters to build a 45-29 advantage, en route to a 56-47 decision.
Kyle Stewart led the SAHS scoring attack with 21 points. Colton Fearday scored 13 and Brody Niebrugge added 12.
Riley Guy scored 20 points Monday night, leading the St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs to a 46-40 victory at Okaw Valley.
St. Anthony led throughout. The Lady Bulldogs were on top 21-14 at halftime and 31-22 entering the fourth period.
Guy pumped in 13 points in the first half and then added seven more in the fourth quarter. Lucy Fearday added nine points.
The Lady Bulldogs, who improved to 4-3, will play at home Thursday night against Windsor-Stew/Stras.
