When Dietereich’s Pete Britton hit a shot from the corner just 2½ minutes into the second half, there was a quick injection of déjà vu for St. Anthony coach Cody Rincker.

Almost two years ago to the day, the Movin’ Maroons staged a late comeback, got a last-second 3-pointer from Callaway Campton to force overtime and then rode the free throw shooting of Bryce McClain to post a 68-62 upset over the Bulldogs.

After Britton’s shot capped a 7-2 run to open the second half and trimmed St. Anthony’s lead to 36-30 Friday night, the game started to take on a similar feel as to the one two years ago.

But this time, the Bulldogs responded. And responded immediately.

They rattled off the next seven points and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way, finishing with a 66-49 victory.

“We talked about that game this week in practice,” Rincker said. “That loss two years ago was a bigger one for me than the team. That team, on that night, didn’t have the focus they needed. I knew we needed to keep our focus tonight.

“I knew tonight’s game would be a competitive game,” Rincker added. “I have a lot of respect for what Coach (Josh) Krumwiede does and I knew it would be a heckuva game.”

Whitney Zumbahlen scored 14 of her game-high 22 points in the first half Thursday night, helping the Newton Lady Eagles build an early lead, en route to a 57-34 win at home over St. Anthony.

Zumbahlen netted eight points in the opening quarter and added six more in the second period, as the Lady Eagles built a 33-15 advantage at intermission. Newton expanded the lead to 49-24 heading into the final eight minutes.

Freshman Lucy Fearday led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points. Riley Guy added seven.

St. Anthony dipped to 5-6 on the season. The Lady Bulldogs will return home Saturday for a game against Arthur. Tipoff is scheduled for 10 a.m.

For a half, the St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs gave the undefeated Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City team all it could handle.

But then Jaelyn Robertson and the Lady Bobcats went to work. Robertson scored 18 of her 22 points in the second half, helping CHBC go on a 36-24 scoring surge and post a 62-47 decision at home.

With Riley Guy pouring in 16 of her game-high 29 points in the first half, the Lady Bulldogs kept the game close. They trailed 17-13 after eight minutes and by just three, 29-26, at halftime.

But Robertson pumped in 12 third-quarter points to help the Lady Bobcats expand the lead to 44-35.

St. Anthony’s Lucy Fearday scored 10 points in the second half and finished with 13. CHBC placed four girls in double figures. Carsen Burks had 13, while Gracie Heckert and Madison Cherry both scored 10.

The Lady Bobcats improved to 10-0 on the season.

The Lady Bulldogs dropped to 5-5. They will return to action Thursday at Newton and then return home for a game against Arthur next Saturday.

The St. Anthony Bulldogs just keep rolling.

Logan Antrim, Jack Hoene and Jaccob Dust all scored in double figures Friday night, leading the undefeated Bulldogs to a lopsided 74-39 victory at St. Elmo/Brownstown.

St. Anthony, with Hoene scoring 12 points in the opening eight minutes, built a 19-13 lead. The Bulldogs then exploded in the second period. Antrim hit a trio of three-pointers and scored 15 points to spark a 24-14 surge that opened a 43-27 bulge at halftime.

SAHS expanded the margin to 56-35 after three periods before settling for the 35-point victory.

Antrim led the way with 21 points, while Hoene scored 18 and Dust added 14.

St. Anthony also won the junior varsity game by a score of 51-25. Seth Hotze had 10 points.

The Bulldogs, now 8-0, will return home Tuesday to face Newton and then travel to Dieterich on Friday night.

St. Anthony used a big first half in the freshman game and a big second half in the sophomore game to post a pair of victories at home Thursday night against Sullivan.

In the freshman contest, the Bulldogs led 17-5 after eight minutes and 36-9 at halftime, en route to a 60-33 win. Jonathon Willenborg pumped in 25 points and Max Sager added 18 for SAHS.

St. Anthony had a 28-17 lead at intermission in the sophomore game, but then outscored Sullivan 29-14 in the second half to pull away for a 57-31 decision. Brody Niebrugge scored 14 points in the second quarter, 10 more in the third period and finished with 28. Kyle Stewart added 18.
