Would the St. Anthony Bulldogs experience an emotional letdown after the big win over Teutopolis the previous night?

Jaccob Dust and Jack Hoene made sure that wouldn’t happen.

The pair of seniors combined to score 50 points Saturday night, leading the Bulldogs to a 58-43 win at home over Newton.

Hoene pumped in 13 first-quarter points and the Bulldogs built a 20-12 lead after eight minutes of play. Hoene and Dust both had 15 points at halftime and the hosts owned a 34-18 advantage.

Behind the hot shooting of Justin Zumbahlen, who knocked down four 3-pointers in the third quarter, the Eagles got back to within 41-37 heading into the final period.

Hoene and Dust then combined to score 13 points in the final eight minutes and the Bulldogs outscored Newton 17-6 to secure the victory.

Jumping out to a 25-2 lead.

What coach wouldn’t want that?

Obviously, the one with just 2 points.

But that’s exactly the situation Teutopolis and head coach Chet Reeder found themselves in Friday night.

Cross creek rival St. Anthony started the game absolutely on fire, built the big early lead and went on to post a 57-43 victory.

It was not the type of game the near-full house at The Enlow Center anticipated.

“I wish we could start like that every night,” St. Anthony coach Cody Rincker admitted. “We need to play with that emotion, energy and execution level every game, especially the right games. And tonight was one of the those right games.”

T-Town’s first basket came at the 1:09 mark of the first period. The Shoes had missed their first seven shots and turned the ball over three times in the first seven minutes.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs were attacking and doing so successfully. Jaccob Dust opened the scoring with his first of three baskets in the opening eight minutes. Aaron Webb and Kaden Fearday both hit shots from long range and Fearday added another short jumper to make it 14-0.

After Matthew Deters got the Shoes on the scoreboard, a 3-pointer by Jack Hoene closed out the opening quarter with SAHS owning a 15-point advantage, 17-2.

Craig Croy pumped in 24 points Thursday night, leading St. Anthony to a 61-39 victory over Windsor/Stew-Stras in the Neoga Freshman-Sophomore Tournament.

The Bulldogs trailed 17-14 after the opening eight minutes, but then went on a 32-10 run over the middle two quarters to build a comfortable 46-27 lead.

Kyle Stewart was also in double figures for St. Anthony, scoring 14 points.
